Out of bounds

Like most ski resorts that cannot offer skiing year round, Wintergreen has a slew of other activities to keep people outdoors and moving even though it’s warm, and those have made Wintergreen a nationally recognized year-round vacation destination. As noted in a recent Outside magazine article, Wintergreen visitors can enjoy 45 holes of championship golf, hiking and horseback trails, tennis and fly-fishing clinics, a full-service spa, a nature program, and general mountaintop grandeur with restaurants, pools, and mucho accommodations.
But if those things draw a long, slow yawn, then perhaps the Out of Bounds Adventure Center will perk you up.
Last year, Out of Bounds opened on Memorial Day weekend with thousands of guests enjoying the 13,650 square-foot skate park, a 25-foot climbing tower, a 7.2 downhill intermediate mountain biking trail, and paintball facilities. Building on that momentum, Out of Bounds has unleashed more options for all ages and ability levels.
This year, along with its regular features, the Center opens the new “Bungy Trampoline.” Out of Bounds manager Jason Schetrompf describes it: “This hybrid bungy device allows people (between 35 and 220lbs.) to safely reach heights of 30 feet off the trampoline!”
As well as jumping, the Center offers mountain boarding (a skateboard, snowboard, bike combo), a BMX dirt park, and additional mountain biking trails for experts and beginners. Bikers of all ability levels can now experience adventure, challenge, and magnificent scenery. Pedalers can even purchase a special train pass, which includes chairlift access to all the new terrain.
Whether you stay for a week or are only there for the day, there’s something to do. The drive and view by themselves can make this a worthwhile day trip. There are oodles of walking trails both at the summit and at the base, and the mountain biking trails have been expanded every year. Bring your own gear or rent from their expansive and top-of-the-line equipment shop. But for the hyperactive and thrill-seeking, the new Out of Bounds Adventure Center may be just the thing.
