If you frequent the nightlife scene in Charlottesville, you've undoubtedly encountered Sidney Tapscott. You can't miss him-- he's got a distinctive look and has earned friendships with many locals from musical gigs at the Blue Moon Diner and Miller's.
His picture has been front and center at the Blue Moon Diner for nearly 20 years. I should know, having been a Blue Moon waitress back in 1987.
Current Blue Moon owner Marcus Hahn threw a big bash for Sidney's 80th birthday Saturday, March 8. The Hogwaller Ramblers were on hand to play some down-home tunes, with frequent frontman Sidney stepping in now and then to play the harmonica with his vegetable can (you'll have to see it sometime).
The diner was packed with birthday revelers, including many artists and musicians, and by the time he left, Sidney's gift bags were overflowing.
Next time you see Sidney, ask him to play you a ditty. I'm pretty sure he has his harmonica with him at all times, and he can make it come alive. You can tell him that "Becky" told you to ask.
