The Flaming Lips Spectacle Lands (Again)
It was a flashback to 2006-- or was it a flashforward to a new dimension. The Flaming Lips returned to the Charlottesville Pavilion Thursday, April 15, with a spectacle similar to their Pavilion performance in the fall of 2006, but with just as much, if not more, energy. 2009 saw the four alt-experimental-indie rockers release two albums: Embryonic, the band's first double-disk release, which garnered rave reviews from critics and fans alike (The New Musical Express dubbed it a "masterpiece"); and a remaking of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, in which the Lips and a few helpers (notably Stardeath and White Dwarfs, who opened for the band at the Pavilion Thursday) recorded their own interpretation of every single track on Floyd's original album.
While the show had a similar look and feel to the Lips' original appearance in '06, the spectacle (and the music!) remained every bit as captivating. One glimpse at the madness captured by photographer Tom Daly will show you why...
