Snaps for kids: Catch the reception today at the Virginia Discovery Museum honoring the student photographers celebrating the Museum's 12th Birthday celebration with their exhibit, "Everyone, Everywhere: Diversity and Kids." Enjoy the photography show specifically for kids and meet the artists, Monticello High School students Miranda Pax, Emily Easton, Grace Busse, and Megan Ravenscroft. Free with museum admission. Teen screens: Eight young local moviemakers reveal details of their lives in films being shown this evening from 8 to 9:30pm at the Corner Plan 8 at 1419 Uniersity Ave. With help from mentors Nikky Kassell, Thadd McQuade, and others, the kids' films tackle personal issues such as eating disorders, juvenile justice, war protests and, of course, love. Going batty: The folks at the Virginia Museum of Natural History and Ivy Creek Natural Area invite families to walk on the wild side with bat expert Dr. Kate Jones as she searches for these nocturnal flying mammals at Beaver Creek Lake. Starting at 8pm, which is just about the time bats get out of bed, Dr. Jones will share her fascination and lead the group in a nifty bat game. Free. Please pre-register. 982-4605

History on foot: The Albemarle County Historical Society begins a new season of walking tours of historic downtown Charlottesville. Every Saturday now through October, tours leave at 10am from the McIntire Building for a one-hour stroll around Court Square viewing reminders of over 250 years of history. A $3 donation per person is suggested. No reservations required. Children under 12 and school groups are free. Group tours can be arranged for other times as well. 200 Second St. NE. 296-1492

Puppy power: Dogs that open doors, turn on lights, and do the laundry? I've got to get one of those! At the Virginia Discovery Museum this morning from 10:30 to 11:30, Peggy Law and the Service Dogs of Virginia demonstrate how canines can help humans. Free with museum admission. Inside the box: Artistic types ages 5-12 can "Create-a-Box" at a workshop at the McGuffey Art Center from 10-11:30am. Artist Mimi Tawes guides kids through the process of painting and decorating papier maché boxes using a variety of materials. The workshop will be held in Studio 10 at McGuffey. NATURE

A rose is a rose: Mrs. Frederick Keays was a singular figure in the history of old roses. During the 1930s, she studied and identified the lingering species that had survived for generations around farmhouses in Calvert County, Maryland. The rose movement of today can be directly linked to her groundbreaking studies. Doug Siedel, a rosarian from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, will honor Mrs. Keays by reviewing her research and the roses she rediscovered this morning at 10 at the Visitors' Center on Route 20 South. $5.

Open house: The 10th annual open house at Thomas Jefferson's Center for Historic Plants' Tufton Farm headquarters features the rose, iris, and dianthus collections in full bloom, plus informal tours of the CHP nursery, including the greenhouses, stock beds, and display gardens. Actors' Intensive Workshop: Based on the principles of Suzuki and Viewpoints, this actor training is designed to develop courageous theater artists who will be able to integrate influences from many disciplines into their own work.
