COVER BOX- The Waltons: still jolting the pop culture
Published May 15, 2003 in issue #0219 of The Hook
Twenty-two years after leaving prime time, The Waltons are still going strong. The homespun television show created by Earl Hamner Jr. was recently picked up by The Hallmark Channel (Adelphia 49), where it airs weekdays at 6pm.
Meanwhile, Kelloggs has discovered the familiar show-opening musical theme and is using it to sell its newest cereal, Fruit Harvest. The current tv commercial shows an orchard with cereal boxes being plucked from trees.
"The Waltons' music provided the ironic feel such spots seemed to need," says Gary Doyle, creative director at Leo Burnett, which did the commercials. "It triggers instant feelings of warmth, family and America, while simultaneously bringing a smile. Like, hopefully, the spots themselves."
