NEWS- Just a trim: Attorney General recruits hairdressers

Published November 20, 2003, in issue #0246 of The Hook

Attorney General Jerry Kilgore has declared war on domestic violence, and he wants hair and nail stylists out on the front lines.

"As a prosecutor, every murder case I tried came out of domestic violence," the AG told 14 CATEC cosmetology students at a "Cut out domestic violence" seminar here November 17. He called domestic abuse "the all-too-silent crime."

And while none of the stylists from Charlottesville's swankier salons were there, Kilgore told the young future hair cutters in attendance, "Many women have more scheduled appointments with you than with a doctor."

He's not asking stylists to report abuse, but he does want them to encourage victims. "Let them know," he urged, "they can get out of an abusive relationship."
