NEWS - Wet view: Dell project unfinished... really

Published December 18, 2003, in issue #0250 of The Hook

The pond at UVA's Dell has been filling, but the project, the subject of The Hook's August 14 cover story, isn't quite finished. Trapped in culverts since around 1950, parts of Meadow Creek and other tributaries near Emmet Street are being "daylighted" by UVA to assist storm water management, as part of the $130 million basketball arena project. Here, just south of Alumni Hall, a 1,200-foot section of the Creek flowing downhill from Observatory Hill is slated to see the light. "They're building the new stream now," says UVA's landscape architect Mary Hughes. Because of the wet weather, however, the pond has experienced a premature fill. "People see it and think we're finished," says Hughes. The actual completion date will be some time in May.
