LETTER- A time to be naked

Published August 12, 2004, in issue 0332 of the Hook

I couldn't help but notice the Orwellian juxtaposition of two items in the 4 Better or Worse section July 22 ["Worst decision for nude teens" and "Best reason to wear clean underwear to school"].

Let me see if I can get this straight. Children who want to go to a summer camp where they can run around naked, even when they have their parents' permission to do so, will not be allowed to in the State of Virginia-- unless their parent physically accompanies them.

But the Charlottesville City Schools will be allowed to forcibly strip search our children-- presumably against the child's wishes, without their parents being present, and, I'd guess, without their parents' permission.

Is this some Republican's idea of less intrusive government? I fear for our future.
