Biggest dynasty: The Fairview swim team captures its 14th consecutive Jefferson Swim League title. The 15-team league met July 30-31 at the UVA Aquatics & Fitness Center for its annual championship meet where coach J.J. Bean's experienced squad retained control of the local waters for another year. Better luck next time to the rest of Central Virginia... The Daily Progress reports Fairview is losing 15 swimmers to graduation.

Biggest show: A returning group of UVA football standouts treats faithful Wahoo fans to an enjoyable evening at the Charlottesville Fashion Square Mall August 4. According to the Progress, linebacker Darryl Blackstock, guard Elton Brown, quarterback Marques Hagans, safety Jermaine Hardy, and tight end Heath Miller all contribute to the fun.

Best streak: The Baltimore Orioles suddenly come together to complete their best home stand in 35 years. The O's win seven straight as they complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, and a four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers.

Worst weather: The World Golf Association officially designates Charlottesville a First Tee Chapter August 5 to benefit local children who haven't had the pleasure of learning about the game. Despite soggy conditions caused by day-long rains at the Meadowcreek course, Charlottesville's inspired youngsters find time to tee off, chip, and even sink a few putts. Most bittersweet victory: Joe Gibbs returns to the Redskins head coaching position to win his first game in 11 years on a dramatic last-second field goal August 9. The Skins' emotions quickly subside though as left tackle Jon Jansen is lost for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Gibbs told the Washington Post that the team has a lot of work to do before the season officially opens next month.

Worst of times for horses: A Chesapeake thoroughbred filly is euthanized August 3 as Virginia's first victim of Eastern Equine Encephalitis. This rare mosquito-borne virus is related to the better known West Nile, which has claimed the life of a local Albemarle County horse and two others in Virginia this year, according to the AP.

Most inconsistent ballplayers: The International Baseball League's Richmond Braves suffer seven straight losses to temporarily lose first place in the South Division. The Braves recover over the weekend to win three straight however, retaking control of the division with a 3-0 road victory over the rival Durham Bulls.

Best comeback: Little League Baseball's 12 & Under Charlottesville All-Stars take home first place in the five-team Waynesboro tournament. After dropping their first game to the Keswick Stables, the resilient group of McIntire youngsters rallies to win five consecutive games including a championship victory over the undefeated Stables. Redskins Football returns-Preseason game v. Carolina Panthers 8pm: Beloved head coach Joe Gibbs makes his home sidelines debut in a preseason contest against the defending NFC champion Panthers. Even for an exhibition game, Skins faithful will pack the stands. You'll have to pull some strings to wire this ticket.

Monday August 16-Wednesday, August 18

Orioles Baseball v. Oakland Athletics 7:05pm-It may be a long shot, but the O's recent hot streak has the birds dreaming of a miracle run toward a wildcard playoff spot. Enjoy a summer evening at the big league ballpark with good seats (prices $9-55) available at Baltimore's Camden Yards.

UVA Football "Meet the Team Day" 3:30pm-5:00pm-Always a fan favorite, this free afternoon event is open to the public 3:30-5pm at Scott Stadium. All Cavalier fans can enjoy meeting this year's 19th-ranked football team.

Richmond Braves' home stand begins v. Charlotte Knights 7pm-With the minor league season in its final stretch, the Braves make their playoff push as they open an important week-long home stand against their division rivals. Series opening ticket prices $3-9.
