Monticello was replaced on the nickel this year, first by the peace medal and right now by the Lewis & Clark keelboat [September 23: "Changing change: TJ gets a five-cent makeover"].

Although apparently there are not many of these nickels in circulation, they were released just as the buffalo and the ocean will be.

The surprise of the recent announcement by the Mint (you might want to check out usmint.gov) was the new portrait of Jefferson. Many expected this to happen in 2006 when Monticello will return.

Apparently the AP story on the new nickels was not very accurate since I have seen the same mistakes in several sources-- another good reason to go back to the source.
