For a while following his 2000 retirement as longtime coach of UVA football, George Welsh popped up in some surprising places. One of the most memorable? Then-69-year-old Welsh hawking cars in a locally produced Eddins Ford ad.
On Wednesday, December 7, however, there was no surprise about Welsh's whereabouts. Following his 30-year coaching career (the first 13 for the Navy, the last 17 for UVA), Welsh was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at a glitzy ceremony at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Welsh's fellow inductees are former Brigham Young head coach LaVell Edwards and 12 former college players.
Also in attendance: Current UVA football coach Al Groh and Craig Littlepage, UVA's director of Intercollegiate Sports.
