Developer Coran Capshaw's renovation of the SNL building at the corner of Fourth and West Main streets on the Downtown Mall was well under way on Monday, December 13. According to city planner Mary Joy Scala, the Board of Architectural Review approved the demolition of "certain elements" on August 17, including the cornice and its distinctive limestone pediment.

After four design submissions, she says, Capshaw's final plan for the soon-to-be-upscale office space included a very large window overlooking Fourth Street and another window over the existing large one on Main Street. Though the "classical elements" will be demolished, the round porthole windows will remain, says Scala.

"Basically, it will be modernized," she says.
