PHOTOPHILE- 45 years young: The Senior Center celebrates

Published February 17, 2005, in issue 0407 of The Hook

BY LAUREN BROOKS

Love was not the only reason to celebrate on Monday, February 14. Charlottesville's Senior Center Inc., the first nationally accredited Senior Center in Virginia, celebrated its 45th year in operation. Members, staff, and volunteers of the Center gathered to show their appreciation.

The University League (now the Junior League of Charlottesville) founded the Senior Center in 1960 (using the Senior Center in Richmond as an inspiration) after determining that the needs of local seniors were under-served. Three years later, the Senior Center became an independent non-profit corporation and continued its dedication to involving, empowering, and enriching the lives of senior citizens in the area.

In 1991, the Senior Center moved from its downtown location into its own facility at 1180 Pepsi Place. With the help of individuals, businesses, corporations, and foundations, the Senior Center was able to build the 3,500-sqare-foot facility without government funding. Today the Center has around 2,100 members served by hundreds of volunteers.

Monday's reception gave members and volunteers a chance to learn about the Center's history and show their gratitude for the role it plays in the quality of their life.
