LETTER- Dr. Hook's right about oldsters
Published February 24, 2005, in issue 0408 of the Hook
Dr. Hong's article ["Bad news, grandpa: Turn in your license!" February 17, 2005] is badly needed, as too many family members think, "Dad is okay to drive if he stays close to home" or "Pop doesn't need to quit driving. He's better than a lot of others on the road."
It is particularly hard for the caregiver to be the one who says "no" to getting behind the wheel. I'm fortunate to have the support of a doctor who had the backbone to say "no" to an elderly driver.
I too do not understand how someone can sleep at night knowing that a loved one may be killed-- or worse yet, kill another-- with their driving.
Thank you for a very timely article.
