BUZZBOX- Taylor made: Idol's soul man hits the Paramount

Published July 7, 2007 in issue 0627 of the Hook

The RIAA has certified Taylor Hicks' self-titled, major label debut platinum.
ALBUM COVER
Earlier this year, as Taylor Hicks stood in the recording studio at 2107 West Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles, he couldn't contain himself.

"I cried," he says. "I was so honored to be in that studio, thinking about how the music that was made there is part of my musical foundation."

The studio belonged to Ray Charles. Hicks was there as an invited guest of Charles' family to record a song, and it was the moment when Hicks realized how far he's come in just two years' time.

It's been nearly a year since the prematurely gray 30-year-old leader of the so-called "Soul Patrol" surprised the world by outlasting his younger counterparts and winning the fifth season of American Idol.

Hicks says he still can't get used to his fame. "I didn't anticipate the magnitude of it," he says. "When people recognize you when you're overseas, that's amazing for a country boy from Alabama."

Fans aren't the only ones taking notice. Since his victory, Hicks has performed with everyone from Willie Nelson to Snoop Dogg, and says he's been writing songs with John Mayer and Robert Randolph for his next album. The respect from already-established musicians is unprecedented for an American Idol victor, and Hicks thinks he knows why.

"I've paid my dues," he says. "They know I've spent a long time in the clubs and working hard at my craft, just like they did."

In addition to respect from his fellow musicians, Hicks recently received the ultimate sign of acceptance: he was parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic.

"I laughed so hard," says Hicks of "Do I Creep You Out?" Yankovic's take on his hit single, "Do I Make You Proud?"

"When 'Weird Al' comes to you and wants to make fun of you," he says, "you just can't turn him down."

When Hicks takes the stage at the Paramount Theater on Thursday, July 5, he anticipates a fun audience, even though he knows most were rooting for another American Idol contestant: Fluvanna County's Chris Daughtry.

"I'm still a little shocked he didn't win," Hicks says.

Taylor Hicks at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall Thursday, July 5. 8pm. $40.50-$50.50. theparamount.net.

Wow, I'm definitely impressed! You got some GREAT quotes out of him. I probably read 2-4 advances or interviews with him in a week and I've never seen him give that kind of insight to anyone else...not even PEOPLE. Want to give any pointers to a rookie reporter?

Nice article! Besides being a great entertainer, Taylor Hicks is just a terrific person. He so deserves any good things that come his way!

His live shows are awesome! You're all in for the time of your lives tonight! Enjoy it! (You'll be checking his schedule for the next one when it's over.)

Excellent preview of what Taylor Hicks is all about. He's a student of some of our musical greats and counts Ray Charles as the absolute giant of his field. He has fought his way to the top -- one gig at a time -- and is now enjoying accolades from his peers.

All I can say is those of you attending one of his concerts will be amazed at his talent and will leave the concert planning how you can go to another one. Enjoy your trip into Taylor's world.

Thank you for the GREAT artitle on Taylor Hicks. I have been to two concerts and he is just amazing. I agree, the concerts are over WAY TOO FAST. Taylor leavs you wanting MORE and trying to figure out how to see him again!

Nice article! Taylor forgot to mention that Ray Charles' long-time manager and others in the Ray Charles studio said that Ray would have loved Taylor. Too bad they never had a chance to meet! Taylor does have permission to record in Ray's studio. The studio has been closed since Ray died and no-one else has been allowed to record in it. It's some honor that they're going to let Taylor do that! Maybe more of Ray's 'mojo' will rub off on Taylor!

Oh how we love Taylor. I went to the Charleston concert last Saturday night. I was not a happy camper when I arrived. As soon as Taylor stepped onto the stage, I got this huge smile on my face. I danced, I sang.....I was hugely entertained. And good golly, what a band!!! I'd go see them without Taylor! But lucky for everyone, you get to see them all! Kick b*tt show!

Enjoy!!!

Great article! You are in for a fantastic time tonight. Taylor Hicks is the best live entertainer I have ever seen...and I can't say enough about his band. What a great time it is. I'll be seeing him tomorrow night in Hagerstown and I just can't wait. I know when it's over I'll be plotting how to get to another concert. Oh, well, it's only money!!!

Aside from him being such a great performer/entertainer, he is a very sweet humble man and I love him for that. This was a great interview! loved it.

I'd never watched AMerican Idol before last year, and I'll probably never watch it again.but last year when I saw and heard Taylor is was amazing. I can't watch or listen to him perform without a huge smile on my face...he absolutely loves what he does and it shows.

I drove from Canada just to see him and it was well worth the time and effort, I'd do it again in a heart beat....wait..I am doing it again, in August!

As always, a plain down-to-earth country boy with golden vocals & a sweet spirit within. Dang, now he's got me crying too!

A year ago this weekend, I saw Taylor in person for the first time on the American Idol tour. When daughtry opened the second half, people were screaming. It was loud! You would have thought he was the favorite.

But then, out came Taylor!! The place erupted and, at that moment, I knew Taylor Hicks was not only the favorite, but he was a star! Magnetic as well as energetic - his goal is to entertain and make his fans happy! Thats exactly what this hard-working humble guy has done non-stop this past year - entertain and make people happy.

When you leave a Hicks' concert, you're smiling, and you're wondering when you can see him again! That's the measure of a "real" entertainer. The fact that he's stayed humbled and focused is the measure of a great guy.

I've been to four of Taylor's solo shows, and will see him again in August. Taylor Hicks was a star a year ago - and he's a bigger star today!

Great article! Thanks! I've been to six (6) Taylor shows and am going to his book reading in B'ham on July 20 at Boutwell Auditorium. This is a fund raiser for Kid One Transport; a non-profit org. that transports kids and expectant moms to Dr. appts. in Alabama when they have no other way to go. Also, going to Biloxi, MS on Aug. 3. Can't get enough of Taylor's fun, energetic performances or that of his band! Great fun!

Taylor Hicks is a breath of fresh air. Whether or not his type of music is your thing, I challenge you to see this man live and not at least see why so many love what he does. He's an entertainer. A performer in the truest sense of the word. And a real musician. I just can't say enough good things about the guy. Hopefully he'll enjoy a very long and successful career doing what he was put on this earth to do.

Take em to church, soulman.

I too have seen Taylor several times in several different situations--at a Meet & Greet, twice in

concert-and on the golf course--and what I have seen is a sincere, sweet spirit shouldering a tough performer who just loves the fans and loves singing. When you go see Taylor live, you really "get" him and feel the energy and the love. Taylor feeds off that energy from the fans

and the band and the music--and the fans love him back. He never stops moving and grooving-and like others have said--it is over WAY too fast-and you will leave wanting more.

Go see him every chance you get--and you'll understand why he won Idol5!!

I was at the Paramount Theater with 9 friends and none of us were voting for anyone except Taylor Hicks when he was on Idol. He put on one heck of a show. We left there and went to Innsbrook to see him again. He is fantastic on the stage. He knows how to please a crowd.

I want so badly to be able to attend a Taylor Hicks concert. I live in manistique, Michigan and the concerts never come close enough. The closest it's been is wisconsin but I never have enough money to go. He is my idol and my number one favorite singer of all time. He is the only person out of all reality shows that I watch that I wanted to win from the beginning and won. He is a true entertainer and I wish more people would see that so he could be more successful. I can't wait for his next album. I will forever be a SOUL PATROLLER.
