  • 57th varieties: Who will get Mitch's seat?

    Let's face it. For years the 57th District race has been a snooze, held so firmly in the mitts of Democrat Delegate Mitch Van Yahres that after a succession of rookie contenders failed to come close to wresting the seat away, the Republican Party simply gave up even bothering to challenge him. When the 78-year-old Van Yahres announced he was calling it quits in early March after 24 years in the General Assembly, former Charlottesville mayor and city councilor David Toscano, who'd been waiting patiently in the wings, announced his candidacy three days later.

  • Elephants' man: McCrystal carries GOP banner

    Tom McCrystal makes one thing clear. "I have no desire to be a sacrificial lamb," he says of his decision to run as the Republican candidate in the heavily Democratic 57th District. Just before the Republicans' May 27 deadline for filing, the mustachioed McCrystal signed on, but he says it's not a last-minute move.

  • Pick your primary: One man, one vote

    June 14 will be the first time since 1988 that both Democrats and Republicans in Virginia have held a primary on the same day. In Virginia, you don't have to be a party member to vote in a party's primary. For example, a Democrat can vote in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor. "All primaries are open to all voters," says Albemarle registrar Jackie Harris, "but you can only vote in one."

  • St. Mitch: Casting a long shadow

    For the first time since 1981, Mitch Van Yahres is not running for reelection to his House of Delegates seat, and he doesn't mind at all. "It's nice to be watching someone else battling for the seat," he says, sitting on the back porch of his house, having a cup of coffee and a cigar, listening to Garrison Keillor and watching the sunset. With the 57th District firmly in his grip for 24 years, Van Yahres ran eight of 12 races unopposed. The first, a special election in January 1981, was the closest.
