Pavilion announces 2008 shows

by Vijith Assar

The Charlottesville Pavilion unveiled part of its 2008 lineup this morning at a press conference under the notorious white canopy. The confirmed events include a handful of non-music events and some new additions in addition to some of the concerts we already told you about.

The B.B. King show on August 6 is set to be the fourth annual Pavilion-sponsored fund-raiser for the CAAR Workforce Housing Fund, a non-profit organization that helps policemen, firefighters, teachers, nurses, and other local do-gooders secure funds for down payments on housing.

In addition, Pavilion general manager Kirby Hutto says we can expect shows from Phil Lesh and The Black Crowes, although the exact dates haven’t yet been nailed down. “We’ve never had this many contracts to announce this early in the season,” he adds.

Here’s what we know so far; most tickets go on sale on March 28.

  • 4/26 - Feist ($25)
  • 4/27 - Switchfoot with Athlete and Sparky’s Flaw ($20)
  • 5/8 - Gary Allan and Sons Of Bill ($27-$42)
  • 6/14 - The Festival of the Photograph
  • 6/23 - Emmylou Harris ($27-$67)
  • 6/28 - Gladys Knight ($32-$91)
  • 7/26 - Live From The Hook official debut
  • 7/29 - Willie Nelson ($31.50-$51.50)
  • 7/31 - Crosby, Stills, and Nash ($41-$112… Yowza!)
  • 8/6 - B.B. King

The first portion of the 21st annual Fridays After Five concert series was also announced. (”Fridays After Five is actually legal to drink,” Hutto notes.) As longtime Charlottesville residents no doubt already know, these tend to feature smaller local and regional acts playing free concerts at the Pavilion on Friday evenings.

  • 4/18 - Sons Of Bill (country-rock)
  • 4/25 - The Kings Of Belmont and 6 Day Bender (rock and bluegrass)
  • 5/2 - Eli Cook (blues prodigy)
  • 5/9 - Trees On Fire and NeedToBreathe (adventurous rock)
  • 5/16 - Abbey Road (Beatles tribute band)
  • 5/23 - The Groove Train (retro funk)
  • 5/30 - The Lee Boys (sacred steel)
  • 6/6 - The Original Charlottesville Allstars (blues)
  • 6/13 - Robert Jospe’s Inner Rhythm and Heather Maxwell (world fusion)
  • 6/20 - TBA
  • 6/27 - Peyton Tochterman (jazzy folk)
  • 7/4 - The Chickenhead Blues Band (blues)

Hutto also weighed in on the recent chatter regarding the alleged impending demise of the Satellite Ballroom, which is reportedly fighting for its lease across town. If the Ballroom closes, it will leave Charlottesville without a mid-sized rock club, and the Pavilion would be the smallest venue in town to attract those national acts.

“We would start to look at some of the smaller acts to fill that gap until the Jefferson Theater opens,” Hutto says. “To keep the music scene vibrant in Charlottesville, we need that ladder of venues, from the small clubs all the way up to JPJ.”

There’s a good chance a lot will be riding on the Pavilion’s shoulders this summer. With tickets for some shows running over $100, that could change the picture of the local music scene significantly.

I am disappointed again at this lineup. The pavilion showed a lot of promise in the first years after its renovation, but this lineup of oldies, country, and mediocre rock is not very good at all. Bring back shows like Robert Randolph, Wilco, Flaming Lips, Ryan Adams, Widespread Panic and other current, exciting acts. This lineup is for my grandparents and maybe a few high school kids. All those shows I mentioned above sold well, but they seem to be focused on going for a much older, more sedate crowd. I guess its going to be a lot of road trips up to DC and Richmond again this year for music fans.

I agree. Moldy oldies. Thank god for the Black Crowes. I might have one show to go to this season.
