The polls were slow on Tuesday, June 11, as a small percentage of Charlottesville residents showed up to cast ballots in the Democratic primary. While Rick Sincere, chairman of the Electoral Board for the City of Charlottesville, expected only 2,000 to 2,500 ballots to be cast– about seven percent of the city's 30,000 registered voters– that number is more than double the three percent Sincere says is expected in most other localities.
"Charlottesville is one of only two localities with local officers on the ballot," he says, mentioning the races for commonwealth's attorney and commissioner of the revenue. "We've got more candidates going, so there's more incentive for people to go out and vote. In the rest of the state, it's just lieutenant governor and attorney general."
