It was a packed house at the Senior Center on Wednesday as the Senior Statesmen of Virginia hosted the Fifth Congressional District Candidates Showcase–- although the only signs of Republican candidate Robert Hurt were the stickers worn by his supporters. Congressman Tom Perriello and independent candidate Jeffrey Clark (the ostensible reason for Hurt's absence) noted the conspicuous absence in their opening remarks, and both vowed to continue waging a healthy, respectful race to Washington. The forum, moderated by WINA radio host Coy Barefoot, took questions from the audience for an hour, and hit upon such topics as the national budget, Afghanistan, and Social Security. Both Perriello and Clark emphasized the need for voter participation, urging the audience to hold Congress accountable for the rising deficit and shaky economy. "We need people to stop hiding behind party labels or sound bites," Perriello said.

Did you miss it? If not, you can hear the audio at the Charlottesville Podcasting Network.

Old Timer, your unhealthy stereotypes are showing! Those in attendance were ages toddler to 90s and everywhere in between and the seniors present were overwhelmingly supporting Rep. Periello and asking questions about the future not the past. Folks over 50 are people too and have a wide variety of interests, perspectives and political beliefs. Stereotyping hurts us all.
There for the grace of god go I...

"Demograpics have shown time and again that the GOP has an older voting population, and most of it is white, with males being the majority" Same thing can be said for Democrats.

ivyhoo-

What stereotypes? Demograpics have shown time and again that the GOP has an older voting population, and most of it is white, with males being the majority. It was held at the Senior Center. I don't think twenty somethings were expected to be the majority in attendance at this one.

So Hurt was a fool to run away and get in a snit. When I was a young man there was something to the GOP. Those days are gone.

I'm surprised Tommy boy didn't manage to outlaw stickers for the meeting.

Perriello just voted for $10 billion to go to Calif. school systems. Supposedly they're going to pay for this by reducing funding for food stamps down the road, as if agribusiness is going to stand for this. Hurt turned tail and ran and should keep running. Is this the kind of behavior one would expect from a cowardly congressman? Why, yes. The only one that displays a shred of honesty and sincerity is Clark, but does he really have a chance of winning? I got tired of voting for the lesser of two evils long ago and may vote for Clark or I may vote for a write-in.

Jeff Clark is the only conservative candidate in this race, yet my fellow conservatives continue to support Hurt. Why? In my opinion, Hurt is even more liberal than PerryYellow!

Ahhahahahahaha. Boy, I tell you, the Republican candidates show themselves for the nitwits without a plan that they are. So many seniors love to pretend it's 1950 and life will return to Ward Cleaver, and their star totally disses them.

Who cares if it wasn't a real debate. It was a chance for the man to talk about his platform.

Both Perriello and Clark emphasized the need for voter participation, urging the audience to hold Congress accountable for the rising deficit and shaky economy.

:-o

Perriello would do this??? He's one of the ones responsible for our outrageous deficits.
