Sun shines on Cav victory
Early UVA turnovers led to a pair of field goals by visiting, Tech-beating East Carolina before today’s football game got dominated by the Cavaliers. At one point, the Pirates, with 20 points, got within 8; but that was before the coolest play of the day, a fake field goal in which backup Cav QB Scott Deke found John Phillips all alone (and possibly laughing) in the end zone. Final score: 35-20 Cavs. (0)
Murder suspect picks up another charge
Alvin Lee “Butch” Morris was in court again this morning, adding a murder-during-the-course-of-a-robbery charge to the three other felonies he faces in the 1988 slaying of Roger Shifflett, the Daily Progress reports. Morris, shown here at an earlier court date, is pictured with Shifflett’s widow, Barbara, whom he married shortly after Roger Shifflett was shot execution style at the Southwind Gas and Grocery on Route 20 south. Food Lion celebrates today
The changes at Food Lions throughout Charlottesville have been happening for months, but today’s the official unveiling of the new and improved stores, which now boast expanded organic foods and wine sections, more fresh meats and seafood, and spruced up interiors. Each of the six local stores will be celebrating with various giveaways and door prizes. What remains to be seen: if the newly upscale Food Lion still has the lowest prices. (5)
Dog wash on the move
Lorri Parrott, the Ruckersville-based owner/operator of Waggin Tails, hoists Bailey after scrubbing the pooch in her large mobile dog-washing trailer downtown yesterday. Dog washing appears to be a burgeoning business. (0)
