Dunkin’ comin’

by Dave McNair

Back in January we told you about a plan to bring Dunkin’ Donuts to the area. (Or maybe we should say a plan to bring the chain “back” to the area, as the yummies were sold here on Emmet Street long ago.) According to local GM Kevin Hunsberger, the chain wants to bring seven Dunkin’ Donuts to the area in the next five years. As DD also owns Baskin Robbins (there used to be one of those here, too, on the Mall and then where the Ben & Jerry’s is at Barracks Road), it means that some of those stores will have ice cream too!

Hunsberger says the first Dunkin’ Donuts is under construction at Lake Monticello and they’ve just signed a lease for another one in Ruckersville. As he told us in January, they’d like to also have one on the Downtown Mall or near the Corner. Again, stay tuned!

We HAD a Dunkin’ Donuts on Emmet and Baskin Robbins was in the place where Ben&Jerry’s now resides. They both went away, and now they want to come back? Strange. Good, but strange. (I sometimes visit the Dunkin/Robbins store in Staunton now, and am happy about it… Just not sure why these didn’t survive in Cville the first time around.)

The one in Ruckersville looks to be well under construction. It’s in the complex where the new Best Western is right over the county line. It’s also about five minutes up the road from where I work, so Hooray! And tito, it’s all about the coffee for me. I doubt I’ll eat the donuts much.

Sad how Mudhouse waited to start accepting plastic until after DD came back.

I think DD didn’t survive the first time around as they only had donuts to offer. Now they have all kinds of breakfast sandwiches and whatnot. I’m sure at least one location would do well. That said, I love Spudnuts.

Heard the old Dunkin’ owner got his franchise yanked for not reporting money he made, so he had to change the name to “Donut Connection.” This is a new guy.

And yes, Jim, it’s ALL about their coffee. And nostalgia for some sugar ringlets we used to enjoy before we got all healthy.

DD in Ruckersville. Can you say TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE? If it were on the southbound side of 29 it might be okay. Imagine all the people crossing the northbound side of 29 to get to and from DD on their way to work in the morning. Better put up ANOTHER traffic light.

Traffic nightmare? Who cares? Some things are more important than traffic.

I can see it now: “Megalopolis Ruckersville Gobsmacked by Insane Donut Traffic!” Millions inconvenienced by tasty pastries! Aaaaaah!!!!!

All hail to SPUDNUTS. May they reign supreme!
