Don’t scream: More snow coming…

news-screamIf you’ve turned on the TV, talked to another human being, or checked Facebook in the last 24 hours, you’ve probably heard the rumor that more snow’s on the way. Alas, it’s true– but it could be so much worse.

State climatologist Jerry Stenger says a light dusting is possible tonight, Friday, February 12, and that Monday, February 15 brings the chance of an additional one to two inches of snow thanks to a storm coming in from our west.

Unlike recent classic Nor’easters, which pick up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, reorganize when they hit the Atlantic, and dump boatloads of precipitation up the East Coast, Monday’s storm is moving in from the Mid-West and shouldn’t be too disruptive.

“These storms tend to be comparitively dry,” he says, noting the snow will likely start sometime Monday morning and could last until midnight.

Stenger says he doesn’t see any other big storms likely over the next 10 days, although he acknowledges that could change.

“Anything outside five days,” he laughs, “is pretty much a Ouija board.”

Well, since Stenger predicted widespread areas of 30″ last big storm and we got around 14″–I’ll add on an extra ten just for the heck of it, and predict Monday’s storm drops 11″ –any other guesses ?

It will only be a light snow. Bring it on!

  • James February 12th, 2010 | 4:06 pm

I heard we were getting like 72 inches…

Lest one forget, the last snowmageddon occurred in March 1996, and this is the middle of February; time to look for more firewood.

I heard we could get three to four feet, and that big snow bombs would be going off, with blizzard-like conditions, white outs and 80 mph winds. Even snow tornadoes. Snowradoes. That’s what I heard.

(let’s start some crazy rumors, see how long it takes to spread around town.)

*Snowrnadoes??? Who knows. But that’s what I heard!

Spread it around town! Big snow tornadoes are comin’ to Charlottesville!!!

We can’t blame this snowstorm for our problems. Everything that goes wrong is the fault of the past snowstorm.

Enjoy the snow , we don’t get good ones like these often .

Now when I get old I wont be able to tell the kids how snow storms used to be :( . The kids in my town are out in full force all over the place . I used to drive through my little town and NEVER see kid’s . I don’t know where the parents were hiding them but my goodness they are like gremlins now , everywhere , it’s a great site as it reminds me of my old hood on snow days . I even seen some kids in Waynesboro dragging a car hood up the old landfill hill , now that brought back old memories .

    life is good

Listin up you young whipper-snapper. I can remember back to the winter of 10 when we had some REAL snow. You should have seen us crazy old gezzers way back then, riddin around in them old fangled gas powered vehicles. You wouldnt know how to use a shovel nowdays, you and your solar powered ice water remover.

ontheroad, the winter of 1910? How old are you?

If we get another massive snowstorm before the year is over, I hope the cop shoppes will start ticketing and towing cars that PARK in the traveled portion of the roadways. The plow crews clear the streets and then people are too lazy to dig out a spot to place their car in, they park right in the roadway thereby reducing it to one lane.

    ontheroad - ROTFLMFAO!!

Gasbag Self Ordained expert - ask yourself what year this is. Then read ontheroad’s post again and enjoy the humor.

The “snowmageddon” of 1996, hit in January, not March. However, in March 1993 we did have a major snow event.
But cheer up,only 2 weeks left in February, and spring about 5 weeks away, the official calendar date that is.
March can bring anything- but we know any snow we get won’t stick around that long.
Groundhog Day in Charlottesville was cloudy- so that means no shadow for the local groundhogs, and an early spring. Sorry for you folks in PA with your Punxsatawney Phil!

Accuweather now saying 3-6 inches Monday:

ontheroad, are you Otis from Martin?

  • BuffaloGirl February 13th, 2010 | 10:48 am

HB, thanks for the correction. I was remembering a March 1990’s snow storm that kept children home for over a week and the whole city ceased operation. You’re right about Pa, drove here yesterday in the snow, woke up to snow, and it’s still snowing–guess we’ll soon take it for granted, like the Northerners do, and a snow forecast will be oh, ho hum.–bet Vancover wished they had more of this stuff about now.

Bill - Gasbag was just so enthusiastic to have found yet another way to inject the phrase “cop shoppe” into one of his comments that he obviously didn’t take the time to really read “ontheroad’s” post and get the humor.

boo!, if it will make you feel any better, I would like to see City Council deal with the problem of people parking in the traveled portion of the city streets after the plow trucks do their job. If they are too lazy to dig out a spot to park their car, the cars should be towed from the traveled portion of the roadways. There’s no reason we have to have one lane roadways in this city for weeks because people are so dayum lazy.

I don’t care who enforces the code once City Council drafts and adopts a law. As a matter of fact, I suspect a group of high schools kids working part time for minimum wage might do a better job enforcing the code. :)

As long as folks are airing complaints:
I get peeved when folks are too lazy to clear off the snow from the car/truck roofs. Then they drive along and you know what happens following them…
Come on people!!! Take a second and use the snow scraper/brush on the top of the vehicles.

  • Gasbag Self Ordained Expert February 15th, 2010 | 8:20 am

The extra weight of this snow on top of a vehicle, especially with this most recent storm with the heavy snow and sleet, adds traction to a car. :)
