Novak now a Charger

hotseat-novakThe former Albemarle/Maryland standout and Hotseat sitter Nick Novak is now a San Diego Charger. Novak has played 22 NFL games with the Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, and the Kansas City Chiefs, who let him go in October, 2008.

In a 2006 Hook Hotseat, Novak said that one of his goals was to “be the best kicker in the league. If I’m going to do something, I don’t want to do it halfway.”

At Maryland, Novak was the ACC’s all-time leading scorer (393 points), and in the NFL he has made 19 of 30 field goals and 32 of 32 PATs (extra points). His career-high field goal distance is 47 yards, which happens to be the distance of the game-winning kick he made against the Dallas Cowboys on November 5, 2006 with no time left on the clock, a feat former Hook reporter Lindsay Barnes was there to see.

In addition, some notable free-agent signings took place after the recent NFL draft, with former AHS and William & Mary QB R.J. Archer going to the Minnesota Vikings (thanks, Todd), UVA OT Will Barker going to the Cowboys, UVA DT Nate Collins going to the New York Giants, UVA WR/CB Vic Hall going to the Bears, UVA FB Rashawn Jackson going to the Panthers, and UVA RB Mikell Simpson going to the Bengals.

And former AHS and William & Mary QB R.J. Archer has signed a free agent deal with the Cowboys. As an ‘84 AHS alum, way to go Patriots! (Just don’t ask about our football record my junior and senior seasons.)

Dear God… Tood Hawkins!!! Whats up playa? I miss the days of you handling the local sports news. You paved the way for these young bucks back when this area was the 804. Much love from Tim Brown and the fam. Any advice on where I should take Novak in my fantasy draft?

Thanks for the props Tim. Your mention of the area code makes me realize I’ve gotten old despite my maturity lagging. As for Novak, hold that pick. I hope he succeeds but kicker epitomizes the NFL acronym as NOT For Long.

I love that the Hawk is out and about in the forums.

Teams sign and release kickers all the time. Novak has to beat out veteran Nate Kaeding, who made 91% of his field goal attempts last year, missing just 3. More likely, Novak was signed to give Kaeding’s leg some relief during mini camps and training camp. Kaeding is ridiculously consistent and last season was his best yet. He’d have to get hurt for Novak to make the team.

Music Lover- what do Kaeding’s stats look like in the playoffs? He’s missed quite a few very important FG’s in the playoffs while playing for the Chargers. The coaching staff and fans don’t trust him in big game situations, so Novak was probably brought in to challenge Mr. Kaeding.

GO RUSH! I think he’ll find the atmosphere in Dallas a lot more his style than that of the Tri-City area. Don’t forget where you came from homeboy! E-ville $4$ Life!!!
