Ventana serves it up

by Dave McNair

Ventana co-owner Michael Fitzgerald wanted us to remind you that his new gourmet Mexican restaurant on the Mall, where Kiki used to be, had its debut on April 11. While he says many of Kiki’s customers returned, he emphasizes that Ventana is trying to be “more of a restaurant than a bar.” To that end, Ventana serves up high-end Mexican food not typically found elsewhere, “avant-garde Mexican,” as Fitzgerald puts it.

Business has been brisk, he reports, describing “a wild weekend” just recently. Has anyone checked it out?

Madison Inn re-opens

About two years ago, Northern Virginia retiree Mike Riley sounded like a man on a mission when he talked about renovating and opening the old Madison Inn in the former Beulah’s space on Madison’s Main Street.

“I plan on doing this until I drop,” Riley, 54, told the Hook. “We want to create a place for the community that will be here for years. That’s what we’re going to nurture.”

However, last November Riley and his wife, Susan, closed the inn abruptly, unable to survive financially on the small town’s main drag. Apparently, that was quite a blow to the Madison dinning scene. According to an article in The Madison Eagle, the town’s meal tax revenue was halved when the inn closed.

Well, it looks like Madisonites are having none of it. According to the same story in the Eagle, locals pressured the Riley’s to re-open for months, even calling the couple at home to make mock reservations. So, with a new business plan (do some catering, dinner only on Saturday, new hours), and a new chef, the Riley’s plan to reopen the Madison Inn on Thursday, April 24.

Indeed, Riley just might be doing this until he drops.

Eat at Bill’s: Life in the Monterey Market is a video documentary about the Monterey Market (see a clip here), a family owned produce market in Berkeley, CA. owned by one Bill Fujimoto. The Monterey Market’s supports dozens of small and mid-sized farms and the docu shows how its done and what it takes. Apparently, Bay Area chefs know the Monterey Market’s back room is the place to find the season’s finest. This is being shown as part of our local Earth Week celebration.
