Camino to replace Il Cane Pazzo

Il Cane Pazzo, the Italian eatery in the corner of the Vinegar Hill Theater building on Water Street, has closed, soon to be replaced by Camino, a Mediterranean-style restaurant which the owner says will “draw from all the Southern European cultures.”

Three years ago, Fleurie and Petit Pois owner/chef Brian Helleberg opened Il Cane Pazzo in the long-lived  L’Avventura space. At the time, Helleberg admitted that he wasn’t really looking for a new restaurant, but he saw it as a chance to preserve a successful business and help its former employees.

“The restaurant really had a good reputation,” said Helleberg, “and the people who worked there were so eager to come back.”

In the end, though, Il Cane Pazzo appears to have became somewhat (more)

Elliewood evolution: Martha’s departs, Cantina arises

For over three decades, the little blue house at 11 Elliewood Avenue had been home to Martha’s Café, known for its signature crab cakes and laid-back atmosphere, but this summer one of the longest runs in local restaurant history has come to an end.

“It was a fantastic experience,” says Carrie Payne, who had run the famous eatery with her husband, Mike Payne, for the last 11 years, “but we’d finally had enough.”

With their children grown, and wanting more time to pursue their passions (Carrie is a painter, and Mike is a chef who no longer wanted the burden of running a restaurant), the Paynes decided to pass the baton, but not without a little sadness.

“We had such a great group of people working for us, and we made (more)

You’re traveling to another world, a world not only of the senses, but of beer. To Frederick, Maryland, to be exact, on the inaugural run of Beer Zone Tours.

The beer junket was organized by Crozetian Paul Minnerly, who loves beer so much he grows hops in his backyard, and offers a private tour of Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick. The $75 ticket includes souvenirs, pizza, a bus ride with other hops fans and of course, beer tasting.

Minnerly dreams of other brewery tours, and has an August 22 “Brew Ridge” trail tour of Devil’s Backbone lined up,  fall-color tours of local breweries, and a Pennsylvania beer tour that will not include Budweiser, he notes.

The Flying Dog tour is Saturday, July 25, and rolls out at 8:50am from Beer Run and at 9:20am from Barracks Road Shopping Center in front of Greenberry’s. Tickets are available at Beer Run or by calling 434-963-9353.

Farmer’s helper: Local Food Hub opens

Back in February, after the Board of Supervisors turned down a request from the non-profit Local Food Hub for $80,000 in Economic Opportunity Funds, the Hub’s director and founder Kate Collier worried it would doom the Hub.

“If funding doesn’t come in the next month,” she said, ” the project won’t happen this year; and momentum, qualified staff, and our energy may be lost.”

What a difference a few months make.

Though the Supes didn’t want to support the Local Food Hub, which will act as a wholesale customer to local farms and a distributor of local foods, plenty of (more)

Restaurant Week(s)? Bel Rio, Fossett’s offer encore

By late last week, several owners of restaurants participating in Restaurant Week reported they were close to– or already– booked solid. Now, halfway through the week, a few participants are revealing that, due to popular demand, they will be extending the bargains through next week.

“We’ve been doing 200 [people] a night,” says C&O owner Dave Simpson, who estimates the restaurant has had to turn nearly that many away. As a result, Simpson says, he’s decided to offer a $25 prix fixe menu at C&O’s sister restaurant, Bel Rio, from Tuesday July 21 through Sunday, July 27.

Fossett’s at Keswick is another restaurant extending the bargains through next week, according to Chef Craig Hartman, who says Restaurant Week so far has been “fantastic,” and that he’s particularly excited by the number of 20 and 30-somethings driving to Keswick for dinner. “Those are the type that like to stay downtown,” he notes.

Next week, Hartman notes, the prix fixe menu price at Fossett’s will jump by $10 to $35.

“We kicked the menu up a little bit,” says Hartman, who says that in addition to the three main courses, guests are treated to an “amuse bouche” (that’s French for “mouth amusement”), which is a small extra course, and, following the meal, a “mignardise,” a small sweet treat.
