Feist to open Pavilion season

by Lindsay Barnes

Canadian songstress Feist will open the 2008 season at the Charlottesville Pavilion. The singer best known to mainstream audiences for her colorful turn in an iPod commercial last year will take the stage Saturday, April 26 at 7pm.

Although the Nova Scotia native only recently earned popular success with her catchy single “1234″ and its elaborately choreographed video, Feist has been in the music business for 17 years. She bounced around the Canadian club scene for the better part of the ’90s until meeting up with long-lost friends Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew in 1999 to form Broken Social Scene. Less a band than a large collective of various indie rockers from the Great White North in the spirit of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue or Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen, the group’s current lineup boasts 19 members.

Since that time, Feist has divided her time between the band and her solo work, which first gained recognition when her 2001 album, Let It Die, reached #36 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.

Nothing, however, could have anticipated the success of last year’s follow-up, The Reminder. On the strength of “1234,” and its iPod exposure, the album reached #16 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and to date has sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S. This Sunday, Feist is up for three Grammy Awards– Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Tickets to see the show are $27 and go on sale Friday, February 8, at 10am through the Pavilion’s website, or by calling 877-CPAV-TIX.
