Snap o' the day: Shields signs
Charles Shields, author of two unauthorized biographies of Harper Lee, signs one for Dot Etchison at today’s opening ceremony for the Virginia Festival of the Book. Shields says his next book is an authorized biography of the late Kurt Vonnegut, due out next spring. “He was very much an extrovert,” says Shields, “unlike Harper Lee.” (0)
No media peeping in Staunton porn trial
Judge Thomas Wood has denied a motion filed by the Staunton News Leader and NBC29 to allow cameras in his courtroom during the obscenity trial of Rick Krial, owner of adult video store After Hours Video and Tinsley Embrey, a store cashier. “The Commonwealth’s Attorney and all defense attorneys in the case object to the presence of cameras of any kind,” wrote Wood in a letter to the News Leader, and added that it’s his m.o. to disallow cameras when both sides object. Krial and Embrey’s trial begins June 17. # (1)

Pillow fight on the Mall
It started in cyberspace, on a website called Stupid Fun Charlottesville, and was later posted on gossip site cVillian, but ended up happening in the real world–a pillow fight in front of Christian’s on the Downtown Mall (video 1 and video 2). Apparently, it was in honor of International Pillow Fight Day on March 22. At 2pm, approximately 15 to 20 young folks waged battle. (1)
Over 100 Viriginia soldiers confirmed dead
According to Defense Department figures, the number of Virginia soldiers killed in Iraq is currently 112. Just days after the five-year anniversary of the war in Iraq, the number of U.S. soldiers killed topped 4,000. The number was confirmed on March 23, after four soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle. (0)
Before the mall became so hard to park near and get to, I use to bank in this building when it was Citizens Bank & Trust. It’s a shame to see such a nice building torn down.
I’m pretty sure that the new building will be quite a bit nicer than this one….not such a shame.
