Murder hearing postponed
Today’s preliminary hearing for Alvin Lee “Butch” Morris, who is accused of killing his wife’s first husband, Roger Lee Shifflett, 20 years ago, has been postponed until August 7. Morris, 67, was released on $50,000 bond June 18 after a month in jail following his arrest for the 1988 execution-style murder of Shifflett at the Southwind Gas and Grocery on Route 20. (0)
UVA alum tapped for Olympic soccer squad
Yesterday, U.S. Soccer officials announced the roster for this year’s women’s Olympic squad, and among those who made the cut is former UVA midfielder Angela Hucles. The trip to Beijing will be Hucles’ second olympiad since graduating in 2000. The Virginia Beach native won a gold medal at the 2004 games in Athens. # (0)
Ehrenreich sits on Colbert's hotseat
Having already endured the Hook’s HotSeat in 2006, author, labor activist, and former Charlottesville resident Barbara Ehrenreich didn’t sweat fake conservative commentator Stephen Colbert his Comedy Central program The Colbert Report last night to promote her new book This Land Is Their Land. After Ehrenreich played earnest working man’s advocate to Colbert’s bloviating free-market conservative for seven minutes, Colbert concluded the interview by imploring his viewers, “Buy this book, so she becomes super-rich and has to swallow her words!” The full interview can be viewed here. # (0)
