news-wagnerEleven months after undergoing elbow surgery, New York Mets relief pitcher and Crozet resident Billy Wagner, 38, returned to the active roster, and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today. “I’m a competitor and you want to compete and you really don’t like somebody to tell you your career is over,” Wagner tells the New York Times. However, the Daily Press reports that Wagner might not a be a Met for long, reporting that Wagner said he would not stand in the way of a deal by the August 31 trade deadline. Interested parties could include the Tigers and the Red Sox.

I’m all for Wagner’s determination to be back in the mets bullpen. Wagner has had an outstanding career but the Mets need some Offensive help to even be considered a playoff caliber team right now. The Mets need a offensive and defensive catcher that can play now, they need a shortstop that can fill in the rest of the year for Jose Reyes and even for next year if Argenis Reyes and Reuben Tejada isn’t ready by next year. Angel Pagan and Cory Sullivan has been playing unbelievably well for The injured Carlos Beltran and Gary Sheffield. One of those two should be starting next year in left while Gary subs in for time to time
