Weather update: Even worse

The forecast is getting worse, with a meteorologist at the Sterling weather station revealing all storm models are now “insisting” that Charlottesville’s in for at least 20 inches and as many as 28 inches of heavy, wet snow starting at 6am Friday and continuing until 10pm Saturday. Making matters worse, says meteorologist Stephen Konarik, strong winds up to 30mph are possible, particularly during the storm’s peak hours, overnight Friday into Saturday morning. That’s just 5mph slower than what’s needed to classify a snowstorm as a blizzard and plenty strong, Konarik says, to bring down tree limbs and with them, power lines.

The one bit of good news Konarik offers: Charlottesville isn’t likely to see any icy precipitation, which will be limited to areas south.

This is why I am a Gasbag Self Ordained Expert —>>

Be forewarned as well, 28″ of wet heavy snow could be enough weight to collapse the roofs on many homes and businesses most likely. Stay out of large box building type businesses such as Walmart, K-Mart and Lowes. Not worth the risk.

    you call this “award-winning?”

Cameron, I don’t think The Hook automatically attaches the words “award winning” to anything they do. They either earn the awards, or they don’t. If they do indeed earn the awards…. you’re arguing with the wrong people. :)

Crap. Worse than the December dump? That’s not good. Stay safe out there, folks. Get home and stay there.

Obviously this is the much anticipated plot by Osnowma Bin Laden, to close all the schools, dumb down our kids so they all stare zombified at Glen Beck, have tea parties, then vote on command for Sarah Palin.

Heck, two feet of snow? Where I come from we call that Spring.

What I keep wondering, especially after having a cab driver today who is on dialysis as I used to be, is why last storm there were no calls for 4 wheel drives to take people to dialysis in center at Peter Jefferson and UVA? Weekends are the most dangeous time for a dialysis patient to miss dialysis so we have Friday and Saturday and possibly Monday too when folks will need rides to dialysis. 2 shifts on Saturday, 3 on Friday and Monday. The most deaths of dialysis in center patients occur on Mondays theoretically because of the two days off and fluid build-up in between. Did I just miss someething last storm? Dialysis techs. and nurses will need rides too if they don’t have 4 wheel drive.

I think it is a good idea to start naming the snowstorms alphabetically just like the hurricanes.
That way many years from now when talking to the grandkids we all can say” Yep, I remember the great AL Gore snowstorm of 2010, but the next storm BARACK Obama was even more devastating.”
Wonder what the next snow storm could be called? C - ? How about the D snowstorm? ETC?
    Anybody have good guesses?
    Stay warm and safe!

Good point formerdialysispatient. Could be organized via Craigs list? Glad you’re better now.

  • Megan at UVA February 5th, 2010 | 12:00 pm

Many dialysis clinics stayed open late on Thursday to get patients in before the storm and many are open today, and some plan to open Sunday. More to the point, the clinics contact all their patients to let them know about their schedules and to make sure they have rides.
