An early morning fire at Wild Wing Café on West Main Street has been extinguished with no injuries, but there may be water and smoke damage, as sprinklers inside the restaurant activated and hose-wielding crews extinguished the blaze, according to Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner.

Units responded within five minutes of the 6:34am call to 911, and the fire, which was limited to the porch but spread smoke throughout the interior, was knocked down within 10 minutes, according to Chief Werner.

By early afternoon, the Fire Marshal had completed his investigation, according to Deputy Chief Britt Grimm, who says investigators were able to pinpoint the location of origin on the porch close to the building, but were unable to determine the cause. Grimm says investigators found no sign of arson. No estimate of damages was available.

Amtrak, which shares the building with Wild Wing, was cleared to resume operations this morning. Calls to the restaurant went unanswered.

  • really? July 27th, 2010 | 10:07 am

Maybe it’s time to clean the grease traps and ventilation? All them chicken wangs can clog up more than just your arteries.

  • C'mon July 27th, 2010 | 10:36 am

They should have let the dump burn down.
PS pave the parking lot already.

  • Tim Brown July 27th, 2010 | 10:51 am

C’mon ain’t lyin - that parking lot is ATROCIOUS

  • Yes July 27th, 2010 | 11:01 am

Perhaps this was caused by [insert ethnic group of your choice here] lightning.

  • S Jones July 27th, 2010 | 11:34 am

    Very interesting.

  • Corny July 27th, 2010 | 6:30 pm

Yes SJones, very interesting. Wonder if this fire will remain under investigation for awhile like the Sutherland Road fire back in January. Just sayin’.

  • seriously July 27th, 2010 | 7:07 pm

where was blink this morning? hmmmm?

  • ireadthehook July 27th, 2010 | 11:44 pm

    Fantastic food. Fantastic place.

I don’t think the parking lot belongs to them. The parking lot belongs to…………….anyone know who the parking lot belongs to?

It would be interesting to get an estimate as to what fixing that parking lot would cost. I would say $100,000. Not easy money to come by. It’s like trying to drive across the Moon.

  • ireadthehook July 27th, 2010 | 11:46 pm

I eat there a lot and LOVE it!
So I’ll pitch in $5 towards repaving the lot. Anyone else?

  • strangerthings July 28th, 2010 | 8:28 am

Someone tried to put out their cigarette on a plant. Too bad the plant was so dry it caught on fire.

  • Ari July 28th, 2010 | 9:43 am

I believe that the lot is owned by Gabe Silverman. I do not know why he won’t fix it. Even just a grading and new gravel would be an improvement.

  • Calling It Like I See It July 28th, 2010 | 11:06 am

Ari is correct. Mr. Silverman has refused to pave the lot and has the whole property “on the market” for some ridiculous asking price and is essentially waiting for the City to come in and take it off his hands so he doesn’t have to spend his own money on it. Pretty pathetic if you ask me - you can’t force him to do anything, as it IS his property. It would be a big boost to “Mid-town” to have this parking lot paved/striped.

  • S Jones July 28th, 2010 | 6:50 pm

    seriously July 27th, 2010 | 7:07 pm
where was blink this morning? hmmmm?

    Well seriously

The clarity of what I saw was Blink, Observer [boc] J.me and Skyler drinking martinis or was it Bloody Marys. Oh, I forgot I dreamed it. Funny in dreams, I do not remember how many glasses there were at the table. but remember it was not 4.
Wow wish I had the power to question what was up with the glasses. Well I love Mr Bo Gangles, I used to prefer Sammy s version, not so much anymore. Do the Wings come with Ginger sauce?

  • unconfirmed July 29th, 2010 | 12:14 pm

Blink was busy trying to convince the world she should either a)replace Joez Baez as Casey Anthony’s attorney, or b) be the prosecutor, jury and judge in the same case.

Her own words in the matter: “There is a zero percent chance Mr. Baez wants to any sort of deposition with me, of that I am positive.

He knows I already know his case better than he does, and I am not saying that to be snark, his lack of copyright law notwithstanding, it would seem to me then he had no business brokering same for his client.
    B”

If that isn’t the most egotistical statement I have ever seen, I do not know what would be. Yet she refuses to ever state what her qualifications are to make such statements. Please, she is a PR firm in Jersey.

  • seriously July 29th, 2010 | 3:32 pm

PR fim in NJ? You are giving her waaaaaaaaaaay too much credit. She’s a low-budget Nancy Grace wannabe. I’m sure she’s on an old PC with a dial-up modem, plotting away, with a pack of feral cats at her feet…

  • ireadthehook July 29th, 2010 | 9:11 pm

In the meantime, the city would have no use, or money, for that parking lot (that runs parallel to West Main Street.)

Has UVa ever offered to buy it?

Just pouring gravel in to the holes would cost thousands of dollars.

  • Calling It Like I See It July 30th, 2010 | 9:04 am

The City itself would have no use for the parking lot - the adjacent “Mid-town” businesses would, though. But you are correct - the City has no money for this lot, and it shouldn’t be the City’s job to provide this parking.

Why would UVA want this lot?

  • osama August 3rd, 2010 | 12:42 pm

isn’t this where Morgan Harrington’s scent was found? why is it just about any location linked to MH at all burns down? if i were a crazy person who liked to set fires and abduct / murder girls i would be heading straight for Virginia. you all can’t catch a cold.

  • Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 3:13 pm

JPJ didn’t burn, nor did her apt, nor her parents home, or VT, so just what are you trying to say actually Mr. Osama? Also it wasn’t conclusive that her scent was at the wing place anyway. The bridge was the last place her scent was located.

  • Yes August 3rd, 2010 | 3:31 pm

if i were a crazy person who liked to set fires and abduct / murder girls
    ***
    If?

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 3:50 pm

    Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 3:13 pm
    JPJ didn’t burn
    —————————————————————-
Technically correct, but look at records. Something burned!

  • Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 3:56 pm

Okay something burned, but to bring MH into every single event that occurs around here is a bit much. Not everything revolves around that case, even if some would like to believe that it does. SJones what do you mean exactly?

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 4:09 pm

    Bonded:

First I agree to bring her up with this article is well like you said.

Record do indicate a Fire response within the week following. Now I and I assume any had that public information in November. So, just stating facts. As far as I know UVA has a Police Department, but Fire response is not done by UVA. I may be wrong.
Now, there is nothing to connect the Alarm, false or correct to MH. Just as there is nothing to Connect Wings and another fire to MH.

But if someone wants to dwell in records, I suggest look it up.
I do my own research! So, these 3 things, do not require much research! it is there. But I do not personally believe that any of the fires are related to MH.
Ironic we have the First Amendment right, but still you cannot yell fire in a public place if there is no fire. Bonded, actually I agree with you, and I even think 100%

  • osama August 3rd, 2010 | 4:18 pm

until you solve the murder of a college student female in your town she will be brought into every single case. everything revolves around that case until it is solved. if you can’t solve that case, then none of the the others matter. there is nothing more fundamental than keeping your constituents save. to protect and to serve. that is it. everything else doesn’t matter. but please continue the ignorance… it is great to educate the small minded people of Charlottesville Unablemarle and confederate Virginia. have a nice day!

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 4:45 pm

    osama August 3rd, 2010 | 4:18 pm

Way of base, Look there are employees of Wild Wings, Owners, patrons. Are you suggesting some involvement. Man, times are hard enough as it is. Let the place open and have customers come in. My God, it is Wings and sports.

Are you blaming the thunderstorms on MH?
Seems, well I am not going to print it, hope they let this one stay, my post.

  • Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 6:50 pm

SJones, I like you more and more. You put it all out here with honesty and see things in more of the ‘grey’ realm. Most here seem to think in a very ‘black and white’ manner. The grey areas are pretty controversial, unsafe territory, leaves one vulnerable to a degree but also where much of the big picture resides, where creativity is generated. I appreciate alot of where you come from even if it isn’t popular to some. JMO and hope you get what I’m saying.
Osama, come on, ALL crimes and murders are resting on this case? Maybe you should get busy looking into the 05 Fairfax rape if you think this case is so omnipotent. Following your thinking, the world should stop til this case is figured out. Might as well not go to work tomorrow either……..more of this black and white thinking. Life may not be moving forward to you Osama since MH’s death, but has for 99.99999% of us.

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 7:20 pm

Bonded: Not here to make friends, the truth needs no friends. Different dimensions. But thanks, just stay on topic.
There is a business and fire. I do not know if you understand the 1.61 for very every dollar. You go to Wild Wing Café.
You order food and drinks, you tip I hope. The suppliers get paid, the delivery truck driver. The cooks, the dishwashers and buss boy get paid. The Servers get paid, hopefully also tipped.

All of these people pay rent, by cloths, pay taxes. And the money is circulating. The owner does not get rich, he survives in this economy. But children get food, Gas stations get money.

And just maybe you have a good meal, meet some friends, watch a few sporting events and smile!

  • Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 7:47 pm

And SJones, your point is???: ). BTW, one cannot be friends with another online unmet. But I like you as an online persona be that as it may.

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 9:31 pm

You understand! Yes on-line is always a risk. But, I choose to assume the poster is real. See I do not believe in bearing false witness against anyone. Because if 3 people use a dozen names but I accuse one real person of such. Than that is a violation of my moral fiber.
Now, Bonded, it sounded harsh to you, but I take you at your word and yes, very much thank you.

Now the Point is. This is business owner, I do not know him or them. But during these tough times, people by the specials and the cheapest drinks. I am quite sure he is struggling to make payroll and keep his or her’s family in cloths, shoes and food. He or she, probably has to choose between medicine or his / her heath and his family. I suspect hos employees are dear to him. So the point is let all of these employees and suppliers stay in business. Let them spend money wisely and for every dollar turned over the impact is critical. Small businesses deserve every brake that get and more. There was fire, he / she did not close and declare a totally loss. No, he / she stood up and got his employees back to work. I think he / she is the hero of the week. I assume he / she is like me, does not need pat on the back. Actions speak much more than words. This week in the news, journalist took a hit, big time.
So this article and the author deserve credit, she never ask for a pat on the back, never. I think we owe her respect and we owe Wild Wing Café staff and all respect.

You certainly deserve respect and I am giving it to you! You deserve it.

  • Bonded August 3rd, 2010 | 10:01 pm

Okay I see what you are saying. Thought in an earlier post you were making another connection with Osama re: MH and her death and Wild Wings. See now that you weren’t, but nonetheless think all your points about the place are right on and make sense to me. I see Osama has returned, hopefully to his country…..

  • S Jones August 3rd, 2010 | 11:52 pm

Bonded. You are correct. To clear it up my first post on the article was directed to absurd people not of your caliber.
You have insight. So please with the topic outlined by Courteney.
I was guilty of being bated. I am certainly not perfect, I have paid dues. I hope to spare you this.
I was wrong, I admit I was wrong, to post that. But it did serve a purpose. It was contradictory, but I did for a reason, that was in the scoop of your concerns. It was a disservice to the author of this article, Courteney is as smart of lady you will ever come upon.
this article should stand on its own, This important and relevant this article.
It shows the authors intent to display a incident that relates to the plight of all during these rough times.

  • Bonded August 4th, 2010 | 1:00 am

SJones I have been known to be absurd from time to time, however not online typically :), at least not to my knowledge fortunately. I agree with you about Ms. Stuart, excellent journalist and a pleasure to follow her work. As for the issue of bating, not sure how one could be ‘guilty of bating’ as you say you were as being ‘bated’ is the fault of the bater and not the batee-their shame in this. Lord knows I’ve been bated and duped, lived to tell the tale and wiser for it. Guess all we can do is live and learn. However there is no such thing as any form of intimacy online in spite of how it may appear or appeal. Herein lies the wicked aspect of spending so much time online rather than with loved ones or out in the world living life. Okay now I’m sounding my age….outta here.

    Bonded August 4th, 2010 | 1:00 am
Well this important Courteney, Bonded and the owners of Wild Wing Café. I believe this on topic.
I can testify that yes you can find true people on line. Not if you look for it. This is the 21st Century. I a human and have been duped, but in the mix, I have found at least 2 true friends on line
from The Hook. Do not give up, yes be very careful. For every rule there are exceptions. The owner or high level Staff member of Wild Wing Café went on line. He was at first rattled. But he answered the call. The few, and they are few actually. That pose as others are not reflective of the readers of The Hook. Have faith in Journalist, understand they have difficult jobs. The first of “The Bill of Rights” was written with a Virginian for sure, maybe three.

So it our constitution is a living and breathing work. some 200 years later it allows us to express ourselves. So, “The Hook” is embracing this new form. Our ancestors were wise. The fundamental principles are on display her, via the INTERNET. So, Wild Wing Café gets some love and sarcastic remarks, so be it. Many more people read than post. There are no votes to be counted. What is important is to not be intimidated by cyber bullies. Do not withdrawal. Relate to the subject of the articles. Express your self. I have seen from this incident on Wild Wing Café a learning experience. I learned something every day this week from “The Hook”. Now that is what my teacher taught me to do. Learn something every day, not from classes but from life. I learned that you admire the journalist. I learned that others share in the pain of this fire. What others may see as on line garbage, I see hope! I see a community that struggles with the events that they cannot control. I see discussions. I see painful and harmfully insults. The measure of Journalist and readers is was this a productive article. I think yes! Others may disagree. But I learned, I suspect Bonded you learned something. I hope that Wild Wing Café learned that people have concern for your entire staff. I hope that even Courteney learned that she is even more needed and that her life is is better for her for her dedication and professional conduct. I think that sums it up, Bonded! I learned from you and that is the best compliment I can ever give.
See i free type, means i do not look at he screen. Misspelling are not by design, they are from my heart to keyboard, See why i admire journalists and Editors and Staff. I am in this Country allowed to express my emotions. Thanks to “The Hook”.

    Corny July 27th, 2010 | 6:30 pm
Well, I have read the comments dear. Do you agree that apologizes are in order to Courteney’s article and “Wings”? You met her. She deserves honesty, right?

I apologize, do you not feel like we together lowered the level of discussion?

I am going to drink some Irish Whiskey and have some hot wings. Because this relative to the article and small business everywhere!

J.me I ask do you not see Bonded and others looking to help?
Why not express your self and help the community?

  • osama August 4th, 2010 | 10:17 am

this IS my country. doesn’t anyone get held accountable anymore in the United States? or did that all change for Virginia when 9-11 took place. remain complacent and you will be the next to experience tragedy first hand.

  • S Jones August 4th, 2010 | 10:55 am

    osama August 4th, 2010 | 10:17 am
This the United States of America. Can you grasp that. No more bashing Virgina OK. USA is united. We fight like brothers and sisters. It is OK. If you are and believe you are a citizen, you have every right to express your thoughts.I am not from Virgina, but some one attacks any state of the 50 states and 300 million people respond. We are united. I was born in the Volunteer State, well earned the name. I live in California, the most diverse State in the USA. We all are in this world together.

The things that seem small, like a little business having a fire are not small. Reporters write we read. That is the USA.
OK sir or madam. I do not judge on any level. I know what it is to be an American. So, kindly take the topic to another time. This is about a small business struggling. This is the political debate going on now. Yes sometimes the USA looks dysfunctional, but show me a better government. Now Wild Wing Café is about as American as apple pie. Yes, it is but one food joint if that makes you happy. But that is the beauty of this Country. I will not respond to you again, I asked, did not receive for compassion. Not for me, but for the Wild Wing Café staff.

  • JJ Malloy August 4th, 2010 | 1:40 pm

    Osama

Who is complacent? What are you talking about?

Why did you choose the online name “Osama”?

  • osama August 4th, 2010 | 2:13 pm

jj malloy - who, what, where, when, why and how? don’t you have any answers? why did you choose the online name “jj malloy”?

  • JJ Malloy August 4th, 2010 | 3:13 pm

Why did I choose JJ Malloy? It is very close to my real name, and it also a character from James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Enough about names, who are you accusing of being complacent? Were you referring to all Virginians, or all Charlottesville residents, or what?

    Thanks in advance

  • osama August 4th, 2010 | 3:22 pm

referring to Charlottesville / Albemarle County … dead girl, no results. not the first to go unsolved in the area. there is something wrong when a girl turns up dead 2 months later and no one knows anything. LE needs to figure this out.

  • whatsrightwhatswrong August 4th, 2010 | 6:09 pm

I’m confused - how can arson be ruled out if the cause of the fire is unknown?

Is this the same as a “struggle” being ruled out when a purse is found in a parking lot with the contents scattered?

  • whatsrightwhatswrong August 4th, 2010 | 6:19 pm

C’mon S Jones (the one and only “original” S Jones), chime in here. I miss you.

  • justiceformorgan August 6th, 2010 | 9:29 am

Crow, I admit, I did make a few statements that were out of line and that I shouldn’t have posted. For those, I apologize. Fortunately, we learn from our mistakes.

I’m not going to discuss it further ~ I think my time will be better spent researching sexual assaults that occurred between 2005 and 2009 to see if any look like they could be related to Morgan’s case.
