Well, it looks like the owners of Marco & Luca on the Downtown Mall are returning to their roots. Co-owner Dragana Katalina-Sun, a Bosnian refugee, who runs the popular noodle and dumpling shop in York Place with her Chinese-born husband, Sun Da, tells us that she’s planning (hopefully) to open Nicolas’ Veggies (Marco & Luca was named for their two sons, Nichola is the third) on Monday, March 31 in their original dumpling spot, the little (very little) to-go window on Second Street NW (right next door to the Hook) where they began in 2002. Katalina-Sun says they’ll be serving sandwiches and salads to begin with, and may add an assortment of juices later on.

“Wish me luck,” says Katalina-Sun.

We certainly do.

Spring fever wine tasting at Crush

by Dave McNair
March 21, 2008 5:30 pm

To celebrate the arrival of warm temps (we hope), the red Cardinal, and folks starting to pack outdoor patios, Crush in Downtown Belmont is hosting another Friday night wine tasting tonight. No charge for tasting and the food on hand. 5:30pm to 8pm. Here are the wines on hand with descriptions from Crush’s Greg Oxley:

Next Riesling, Oregon: Perfect for Spring weather this beauty is going to wow you. Aromas of citrus, floral blossom, peach, lemon, and perfume. Crisp white peaches, tangerine, floral, ripe cantaloupe, and dried apricot. This is dry Riesling from the famous King Estate in Oregon who are considered pioneers in the development and research in Oregon white grape growing. $13.99

14 Hands Merlot, Washington State: We are fanatics for Washington wines and this Merlot is a great example why. Sourced from the famous Horse Heaven Vineyards. Aromas of black/blueberry and dry mocha. Flavors of blackberries, raspberries and cherries are enhanced by a plush mouth-feel as ripe fruit characters and refined tannins unite. This is a great example of what growing quality fruit, high standards, and good quantity come together. $11.99 (more)

Ten cent martinis at Keswick

by Dave McNair

Update 3/21: I guess it was just too good to be true…. it looks like the 10 cent martini deal is just for Keswick club members. While front desk personnel and bar staff told us it was open to the public, when we double-checked with director of operations Matthias N. Smith, he told us it was promotion “aimed discreetly at our club members- not designed for public knowledge.”

However, the bar, the Blenheim tasting Room, For Love of Wine series and the Chef’s amuse are open to the public, he says.

***

The folks at Keswick tell us that they’re offering something you don’t usually find in such a swanky setting–10 cent martinis on Thursdays! Now, before ya’ll pile into the Wahooptie and head down 250 east, know that, yes, it’s open to the general public, but it’s only 10 cents for your first martini. All other drinks are full price. In addition, you’ll have to get there between 5pm and 6pm. Still, being able to wind down after a busy day at such a fine place for only 10 cents…priceless.

Localvores get flawed analysis in Progress

by Hawes Spencer

Local produce travels 60 miles while grocery produce averages 1,600. Too bad the latter is more fuel-efficient.

That’s what the Boston Globe revealed last year in “The localvores dilemma.” Such analysis is lacking in this morning’s Daily Progress story in which a a reporter and headline writer seem to believe that “local produce saves energy in huge way.”

However, what follows is a horror of fuel consumption about what happens with local produce: the average farmer’s market vendor travels 60 miles for each visit.
Picture 311 pickup trucks, station wagons, SUVs, and sedans converging at the downtown City Market each bearing just a few bushels of veggies. The researcher found that the Market burns through as much energy as 18 homes.

Suddenly, that lone 18-wheeler bearing a giant load and hoofing it over from the American Midwest or California doesn’t seem so bad. It’s obvious that the fuel-expended per food item on the trip from the factory farm is actually much less.

Several of us at the Hook wouldn’t dream of getting our veggies anywhere but from a CSA . But while there are a lot of great reasons to buy locally, transport fuel efficiency is not one of them.

You gonna eat your tots?

by Laura Burns

To celebrate the introduction of a new late night menu and bar, Boheme is offering free food to anyone who comes in tomorrow evening after 10pm. While they’ve played around with a late night scene in the past, general manager Nick Mattia says the current late night menu “isn’t that great,” and that he wants to “do things like a barbecue pizza, tater tots, and cheese plates.”

Update 3/20: Mattia also wants us to mention that Cajun-marinated frog’s legs sauced with a roasted plum yogurt, Pomegrante-molasses glazed sweetbreads and shitakes over savoury French toast, Shellfish Crepes, Chicken Livers wrapped in bacon, and Blackeyed pea cakes will also be available.

Entertainment plans are still in the works, but Mattia would like bring in a DJ and possibly have live music.

Mattia also adds that he’s considering hosting a “tea dance” on Sundays as a post-brunch party from 5-9pm. While the Hook is not sure what kind of dancing goes on at a “tea dance,” one would guess (more)

Dulaney’s closed…but will reopen

by Hawes Spencer

Update 3/21: Indeed, it is just a seasonal closing. Owner Phil Dulaney tells Dish he’s doing a little remodeling and will re-open starting on weekends sometime in May.

***

Egads! We stopped Sunday at one of our favorite spots for great views and friendly served food and found it closed down tight. Dulaney’s, the only hotel restaurant located on the luscious peak of Afton, has been closed since about October, said the lady working the hotel desk.

Hanging over the Charlottesville side of the Rockfish Gap, the restaurant has long been a favorite for clandestine meetings and sumptuous views of the Greenwood valley. Maybe the closing is just a seasonal thing? Located in what was once a Holiday Inn, now the Inn at Afton, the restaurant may reopen in the spring, according to the desk clerk.
