It was a momentous day in Crozet dining history on Monday–the little hamlet to the west welcomed its first Chinese take-out restaurant! Appropriately enough, it’s called New China. Located on The Square in the space formerly occupied by the Crozet Snack Shop, the joint already appears to be jumping. When we called earlier to find out more we were told they were too busy to talk. According to Crozet resident and real estate blogger Jim Duncan (thanks for the photo, Jim), folks in town are saying it is really good–and the lunch special is only $5.72! However, you might want to get yours to go, as Duncan says there’s only one table. And get this: Duncan says there is a sign up at the Clover Lawn Shopping Center that says another Chinese restaurant will be opening up soon. Ah, when it rains chow mein it pours.

Serves up traditional Indian food with a spicy kick and a broad menu: lamb curry, chicken tikka, vindaloo, korma, mango, and masala, and knockout kheer. Great lunch buffet, too!

Crozet- or what was once a town with character, already had a chinese place, long before the suburban driving soccer moms, where the jarmans grill is located. It wasn’t any good, but neither is the traffic on 250 headed west for the new suburbs.
Dang, I knew some smarty pants was going to let me know there was one long ago! Do you have any details on it? How long ago? How long did it last? Why did it close?

The Rice & Spice Cafe was the hub my adolescent social life and I was sorry to see it go. I must disagree with Sesame Chicken, the food at the R&S was above average for a small town Chinese joint. The lo mein, General Tso’s chicken, and steamed dumplings were a-okay (at least in my nostalgia tinted mind’s eye).
It was located where Three Notch’d Grill is now (ex-Southern States). This was 1993-94 or 94-95. I don’t think it lasted beyond 1996. Nobody, besides our group of rowdy teenagers, was ever in the place. I always imagined that we drank so much coffee under the free refill policy that they went out of business.
