In 2005, John Legend’s “Ordinary People” had the most adventurous chord changes anywhere on the R&B charts, but at only three albums in, he’s still working on earning that stage name — it’s a little arrogant, but then again, this guy was originally one of Kanye’s pet projects. Case in point: “Green Light“, last year’s collaboration with Outkast lunatic royalty André Benjamin/3000 and the lead single from Evolver, is pretty conventional in comparison — not a bad showing for lightweight pop, but ultimately more disposable than legendary. Opener India.Arie, on the other hand, might still one day take up the neo-soul tiara should Erykah Badu, say, fall victim to an unfortunate accident of some sort. Both artists, however, are loaded with Grammy nods (wins for Legend, nominations for Arie), making this quite the powerhouse bill for the modern soul fan.
