The youth, who had been on his way to a behavioral treatment center in Missouri when he bolted from the bathroom on I-64, was picked up in the men’s department at Belk. “He was located while we were investigating a shoplifting report,” says Lieutenant Todd Hopwood with Albemarle police.

The Downtown Mall’s Free Speech Wall is one of five finalists for the The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence, along with Millennium Park in Chicago and St. Joseph Rebuild Center in New Orleans, a day center for the homeless with services geared toward helping in disaster situations. The award, created in 1986, recognizes excellence in urban placemaking, from design to planning to the public’s interaction with the space. For some, that interaction with the Free Speech Wall has been a noble symbol of our Constitutional rights, but for others it has been an ignoble symbol, a kind of open-space bathroom stall that constantly needs cleaning. The gold medal winner will get $50,000 and the silver medals are worth $10,000 each.
If you thought cattle rustling had been relegated to the dustbins of Old West history along with wagontrains and gunfights at the O.K. Corral, think again. On Friday, a Mount Sidney farmer was missing five of his Hereford head, so, on a hunch, he went to a cattle auction at the Staunton Union Stockyard later that day, to see if he recognized any of the bovines up for bid. According to the Staunton News Leader, it was here he allegedly found his neighbor David Fitzgerald of Fort Defiance trying to sell the looted livestock. Augusta County sherriffs charged Fitzgerald with grand larceny and he is now free on a personal recognizance bond.

A fourth-year UVA student hospitalized on March 25 with bacterial meningitis has made a full recovery and was released last week, according to UVA spokesperson Carol Wood.
The male student’s identity has not been released due to confidentiality laws, says Wood. The strain and whether the student had been vaccinated against the disease are also confidential.
Ninety five percent of UVA undergrads have received the meningococcal vaccine, which is 90 percent effective against four of the five strains. The disease causes stiff neck, severe headache, and a high fever, and has a mortality rate of 15 percent.
Although one student tested positive for the bacteria in January 2007, it’s been two and a half years since the last full blown case struck Charlottesville. UVA student Jennifer Leigh Wells, a Monticello High School grad who lived off campus with her family, died September 10, 2006 at UVA Medical Center– days after she’d first complained of a headache.
Wood attributes the latest victim’s survival to his seeking out and receiving prompt medical treatment.

While his $31 million Landmark Hotel faces an indefinitely long work stoppage while he slugs it out with his lender in court, Internet entrepreneur and Charlottesville native Halsey Minor has reportedly made a $200 million bid to buy a collection of Maryland racetracks, including Baltimore’s 139-year-old Pimlico Race Course, home to the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, the Preakness. Pimlico’s current owner Magna Entertainment Corporation has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That’s not to say Minor has the cash on hand. Minor tells the Baltimore Sun that in order to make the deal happen, he would sell off some of his assets. In addition to the $200 million purchase, Minor would also either buy or re-structure the company’s remaining $225 million debt. A judge will hold a hearing on Minor’s and other bids in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday, April 15.

On Tuesday, April 2, former Virginia Tech football star and NFL quarterback Michael Vick appeared in U.S. bankruptcy court in Newport News, where his attorney stated that Vick had lined up a job working construction once he is set to be released from federal custody on July 20. According to the Associated Press, Vick will be working full-time in his new line of work. The former Atlanta Falcon is serving a 23-month sentence for having funded and helping to operate a dogfighting ring out of a house he owned in Surry County.
