Godfathers of soul, country coming

Singer James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” and Willie Nelson, the pony-tailed king of country (who once bragged of smoking marijuana on a balcony at the Carter White House), are among the mega-stars who’ll perform this summer at the Charlottesville Pavilion. The announcements, made today by Pavilion manager Kirby Hutto, are the latest wave in Charlottesville musical history which will soon see Ween and Wilco play at the Pavilion and which saw the Rolling Stones perform at Scott Stadium last October. Today’s announcement also revealed that melodic rocker-pianist Bruce Hornsby, Merle “I’m proud to be an Okie” Haggard, and an act featuring Wynton Marsalis and the Neville Brothers will star among the performers at the newish outdoor facility built on City land by Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw.#

Couric ranks 62nd on 'Most Poweful Women' list
In its annual ranking of the “Top 100 Most Powerful Women,” Forbes ranked CBS Evening News anchor and UVA alumna Katie Couric 62nd among all women worldwide. That’s one better than Couric’s previous year standing of 63rd, but it still not high enough to top Meredith Vieira (#61), the woman who replaced Couric as co-host of NBC’s Today when Couric quit the morning show to become network TV’s first solo nightly news anchor in 2006. Coming in at #1 for a third year in a row was German chancellor Angela Merkel. # (1)

Rain falls, so why do reservoirs?
Reservoir-watchers may be scratching their heads this morning over the latest reports from the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority which show the Rivanna Reservoir still four feet down and have even fallen 1/10th of a foot since yesterday, and the Ragged Mountain Reservoir has fallen 1/5th of a foot since yesterday. With least an inch and a half of rain, how could that be? “We take our readings at midnight,” explains Authority executive Robert Wichser, adding that visual inspections at 8am today are showing higher levels. “We’re seeing,” says Wichser, “a favorable response to the rain.” (0)

Stewart to Warner: 'Your speech sucked'
Apparently Daily Show host Jon Stewart isn’t a fan of former Gov. Mark Warner (D). On last night’s show, after showing a montage of clips from Warner’s keynote address at the Democratic National Convention of the former guv talking about his experience in the cell phone industry, Stewart whipped out his own cell phone, and said into it, “Is Mark Warner there? Oh, he’s busy? Can I just leave a quick message? Yeah, your speech suuuucked. It suuuucked. It made no sense and you suuuucked.” (Skip to 1:39 in the linked video to see it for yourself.) # (0)

Fay remants drenching us
Remnants of near-Hurricane Fay have rescued farmers, parched lawn-owners, and the 4-feet-low Rivanna Reservoir. Call it the “media rain dance,” if you will, as the storm— which the National Weather Service estimates has already dumped over an inch and a half at the airport— follows numerous news accounts of how this month was heading toward becoming the driest August on record. The Service is calling for a “near 100 percent” chance of more rain today. (0)
