Could a UVA Law alum be one step closer to the Supreme Court? MSNBC reports that Secretary of Homeland Security and 1983 UVA law school grad Janet Napolitano has made President Obama’s shortlist of six candidates to fill the vacancy on the highest court in the land left by retiring Justice David Souter. The report from the “First Read” blog singles out Napolitano because she was an early supporter of Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary, and that “from people familiar with the president’s thinking, he’s been as impressed with Napolitano as anyone in his cabinet. They click. That matters.” If nominated and then confirmed by the Senate, Napolitano would be only the fourth Supreme Court justice to come from UVA, and the first since Franklin Roosevelt nominated Justice Stanley Reed in 1938.

How’s this for severance pay? Five months after getting laid off from his job as a construction worker, Joe Denette of Spotsylvania County purchased one of three winning Mega Millions lottery tickets from the May 1 drawing, entitling him to a $75.6 million payout, the third-largest prize in Virginia Lottery history. However, Denette is opting for the lump sum payout option, leaving him with a mere $47.8 million before taxes. Denette purchased the ticket at the Joyful Convenience Market in Woodford. (1)
A platoon of newspaper boxes (18 in all) stand at attention on the West end of the Mall. A number of them (1, 2, 3, 4) are not identified as serving any publication. City Councilors were at odds over a proposed plan to install “corrals” to conceal the boxes as part of the Mall project. Councilor Satyendra Huja called the current arrangement “hideous,” and Councilor Julian Taliaferro called them “tacky.” Councilor David Brown and Mayor Dave Norris, however, liked them the way they were, and Norris bristled at the idea of “government newspaper corrals.” In the end, the plan was nixed. Following a 4-for-5 performance against the San Francisco Giants on Monday, May 11, Washington Nationals third baseman and UVA alum Ryan Zimmerman extended his streak of games with at least one hit to 29 games. That puts him past the halfway mark of breaking the all-time record for a hitting streak set by New York Yankees centerfielder Joe DiMaggio, when he got a hit in 56 consecutive games in 1941. In all the years since, Cincinnati Reds third baseman Pete Rose came the closest to breaking DiMaggio’s record with a 44-game streak in 1978. Zimmerman will go for 30 against the Giants on Tuesday, May 12 at 10:15pm.
