The “green roof” put on City Hall last May (over the objection of at least one former Councilor) is looking a little brown these days— or at least on Friday, February 27, the date of this photo. However, it’s just wintertime dormancy, according to City spokesperson Ric Barrick, who also expects a second year growth spurt. As for the financial controversy, Barrick points out that City Hall envisioned spending $338,000 for a thermoplastic olefin roof. The green roof came in under budget at $397,000, so the green premium, he says, was just $59,000. (The County built a “green roof” of its own in 2005.)

The drive-thru bill-pay window at the Albemarle County Office Building is the latest victim of the economic crisis. Despite a proposed eight percent hike in the property tax rate, the County’s hiring freeze means that there aren’t enough clerks in the finance department to keep the window open, says County spokesperson Lee Catlin. However, as tax time looms in late May and early June, the window (shown here February 25) will probably reopen temporarily, Catlin says.
Premo Auto Body, a nearly five-year-old firm operating in Belmont, has become the first in town to offer BASFs “Glasurit 90” line of water-based paints. “That’s just safer for the environment, safer for our employees, and better for the car,” says bookkeeper Dreama Walker, who notes that many manufacturers, including Mercedes, have switched from solvent-based to more eco-friendly water-based paints.
very nice, but I still don’t get it - was there too much money burning a hole in some government budget?
Check out out those bricks, especially the damaged ones. Hopefully the City will be checking those damaged and have them replaced!!!
