Albemarle County knocked down this house in preparation for building a new library, but the budget experts didn’t count on recession, so the library’s on hold. The house is part of “Lost Albemarle,” the current exhibition at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society.

I will be interested to see the current exhibit and discover what other historic buildings we have foolishly demolished. With all the architects and historians in town I’m continually amazed to watch as these one of a kind buildings are lost. I am still saddened by the destruction of the Beta/Compton house on Maury Ave.

WAHS makes Newsweek list of best high schools

For the sixth consecutive year, Western Albemarle High School has made Newsweek’s list of America’s Top Public High Schools. The list is based on the ratio of Advanced Placement tests taken by its students to the number of total students at the school, and WAHS finds itself ranked 1,179th in the country on this year’s list. This represents a tumble of sorts for the Warriors, having come in the top 500 schools five out of the last six years. Also falling in the rankings was Charlottesville High School, whom Newsweek ranked at #529 last year, only to miss this year’s list completely. The top ranking Virginia high school was Arlington’s HB-Woodlawn, coming in at #36. (0)

UVA IM chief Mark Fletcher dies suddenly

Mark Fletcher, the affable UVA administrator who oversaw key aspects of major concerts at Scott Stadium and built the university’s intramural sports program into a nation-leading juggernaut in which 94 percent of students participate, died June 8 after a morning run. UVA chief operating officer Leonard Sandridge hails the 57-year-old Fletcher as “simply the best.” (1)

CSA to move its Crozet spot

Brett Wilson smiles during food-retrieval time Saturday, June 6, his CSA’s last day in the parking lot of Tabor Presyterian Church in Crozet. Asked to share five percent of the proceeds, Wilson decided instead to move the food pick-up point to nearby Old Trail Village which— while it may not be able to offer giant shade trees— won’t charge the Community-Supported Agriculture entity a fee. (Wilson’s CSA, Horse & Buggy Produce, has the audacious distinction of using UVA’s North Ridge medical building parking lot for three years sans official permission, a squat that ended last year.) Cavs headed to College World Series

After beating Mississippi 5-1 this afternoon in the super regional series, the UVA baseball team has earned its first trip ever to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Cavs set a school record this season with 48 wins and 13 losses. (2)

John Kase helped make D-Day possible

One Charlottesvillian who didn’t survive all the way to the 65th anniversary of D-Day but who help make it possible was John Kase (right in photo shot in 1996) who died May 24 at the age of 94. A career theater man, he got his first such job at 15 as an usher at the Jefferson Theater for 25 cents an hour. He rose to larger roles within the company, Dominion Theaters, which also owned the Lafayette and University Theaters, the latter of which he was managing in 1942 when he joined the Army to became part of the 831st Aviation Engineers, which built an Allied airfield near the village of Willingale, and he lamented the destruction of gorgeous pasture. Kase got back his job as manager of the University Theater upon his return in late 1945. He later worked as a “troubleshooter” for Neighborhood Theaters across the state, eventually settling into a spartan little office (now the Flat crepe stand) at the back of the Jefferson Theater along Water Street near the mammoth popper that supplied popcorn for most of the Charlottesville theaters. Among his tasks were demolishing the Lafayette to build a Rose’s in the 1960s and building and then demolishing the Ridge Drive-In, which is today the site of the Hydraulic Road Kroger. He continued work until Neighborhood was purchased in 1988 by Canadia-based Cineplex-Odeon. (0)
