news-uvabaseball2The UVA baseball team squandered too many chances to beat Arkansas last night in the College World Series, stranding men in scoring position in the bottom of 9th, 10th, and 11th innings when all they needed was a single run in the 3-3 game. In the 12th, Arkansas took a 1-run lead, and again the Cavs stranded a runner on third. The Razorbacks went on to win 4-3. Starting pitcher Danny Hultzen threw a gem through 6 innings, and a win seemed all but assured with two outs in the top of the 9th, but the Cavs’ magical season appeared to unravel when Arkansas sophomore Brett Eidner belted a two-run homer  to tie the game. However, as one ESPN announcer said, “We’ll see the Cavalier team here again, and maybe for years to come.” Indeed, earlier in the week coach Brian O’Connor was named National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writer’s Association for leading the young Cavalier team to a record-breaking 48 win season and their first trip to the College World Series.
