An annual fashion show on the Downtown Mall on Saturday evening, September 19, featured clothes and accessories from Downtown shops, and models modeling them, including one of Playboy’s newest “Girls of the ACC.”
Congressman Tom Perriello tells MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski that race is a component in some of the vehement opposition to President Barack Obama’s health reform that he encountered in oft-raucous town hall meetings, Politico reports. While rare, Perriello says he did hear racist remarks that sometimes were called out by the audience, sometimes not. The GOP responds that Perriello, much like Jimmy Carter and Nancy Pelosi, mistakes genuine opposition for bigotry, and that’s the result of his Ivy League “elitism.” (15)

UVA English prof/acclaimed writer Deborah Eisenberg is one of 24 people chosen for the 2009 MacArthur Fellowship, which comes with a no-strings-attached $500,000. Rich literary experiments drive The Decemberists’ sound.Nobody thought it could be done, but the Decemberists have out-Decemberisted themselves, as it were. Their most recent album, Hazards Of Love, one-ups even 2006’s The Crane Wife in large-scale form and thematic unity, spending the whole hour on one storyline instead of splitting it in half.
