More crimes against UVA students
Write a letter to the editorA day after UVA held a press conference to address three alleged assaults on students, two more students have been the victims of a crime. According to a press release from the City, two female students were accosted on Wednesday, September 29 between 7:00 and 10:00pm by a young black man, aged 20-23, wearing a gray hoodie and dark colored jeans or pants.
In the first incident, the student was in the 1200 block of Wertland Street when she was approached by the suspect, who placed his hand on her shoulder and told her not to move. According to the release, after a “brief conversation,” the nature of which has not been revealed, the suspect allowed the woman to walk away. Nearly three hours later, a second female student was not as lucky.
At 9:50pm, that student was walking in the 2100 block of 15th Street when the suspect— who police believe is the same man— placed what the victim believed to be a gun against her back, then forced her to walk to several ATM machines in an attempt to withdraw money. The assailant fondled the victim, took a “small amount of money,” and fled, leaving the student physically unharmed on the Corner.
The suspect is a light skinned black male with a thin build and of medium height. Anyone with information on these crimes should call Crime Stoppers at 977-4000.

TO ALL UVA FEMALES, MACE ONLY COSTS ~$13

@disgusted.. true, mace is a good idea. The only thing to keep in mind when using it.
Get a good “line of fire” , hold your breath, spray and RUN (still holding your breath).. if you linger, you too will be injured by the mace. Keep that in mind. It’s an airborne thing, and isn’t missile guided.
I would imagine that given Ms. Harrington’s unsolved murder and the countless assaults/attacks throughout the community, including the campus and surrounding areas of The University, criminals feel they have free reign. When are the community and college going to come together and say “enough”. This is nuts.
Wertland Street has always been an area where students are in harm’s way especially at night. This due to the proximity of the “jects” which swarm with antisocial types. Robberies and assaults have been numerous over the years. Westhaven is overdue for condo conversion or some other use.
This is not new crime, or increased crime. The only thing different, I suspect, is that there is a renewed sense of cooperation between UVA and the local law enforcement. With a new leader at the university, you will now hear about THE crimes that have always been hushed up.

Jenny @ UVA - beware, another female student was held up this morning (Friday) at 1:00am….
Susan: For the last three years I’ve received these emails on a regular basis about assaults on grounds or in the Charlottesville area.
@Wahoo: That’s because they are required to do so by the Clery Act.
Ever since the VA Tech Massacre, schools across the country have been doing a much better job at adhering to the Clery Act guidelines.
UVA currently has complaints pending with the Dept of Education for Clery Act (and Title IX) violations that occurred in 2004. It is in their best interest to show a recent historical pattern of compliance with these laws.
