‘News to You,’ the Downtown Mall’s first newsstand in nearly a decade, opened today– with a quotation from Thomas Jefferson emblazoned on the side: “The only security of all is in a free press.”

As previously reported here, the stand is a project by Steve Russell, a former high-ranking editor with both Playboy and Maxim, who moved to Central Virginia from New York last year.

He says he was a little surprised that Charlottesvillians quickly snapped up his allotment of the New York Times shortly after he opened this morning at 6:30. During this interview, a frustrated Times fan came by seeking a copy. So why don’t Times-lovers just subscribe?

“Some people like the ritual of going to get it,” explains Russell. “It gets them out of the house. People in New York don’t subscribe to it.”
