NBC 29 is reporting that Albemarle High School swimming coach, Kyle Wilson, died suddenly this morning when he collapsed at a swim meet in Annapolis, Maryland. No cause of death has been determined. Wilson also coached the ACAC Dolphins swim team and was assistant coach for the Va. Gators Swim Team. Wilson, who was in his mid-30s, swam for Auburn University from 1989 to 1993.

Woodbrook, the neighborhood that successfully forced planners of the Meadowcreek Parkway to trim that road’s ambitions over a decade ago, now wants to stand firm against what many neighbors see as ruination: connection to the planned Arden Place development. The ‘riff raff’ comment resides at the Woodbrook neighborhood blog where opposition to the 206-apartment complex (tucked behind Albemarle Square Shopping Center), runs high. The Albemarle Supervisors will make their desire to save the historic but to-be-chopped-by-VDOT Hatton Ferry final July 1 when they vote for a nearly $8,000 appropriation, according to the Free Lance-Star. However, the Supes also reportedly hope to tap local citizens for permanent funding for the James River-based operation. (The town of Scottsville issued a May 28 resolution lamenting VDOT’s action.) If President Obama has his way, a prominent Virginia politico will soon be packing his bags for Bern. Former Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer (D) is the president’s choice to become the next U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland. The Falls Church auto dealer and 1997 Virginia gubernatorial candidate was an early backer of President Obama’s candidacy, and according to the Washington Post raised more than $1.5 million for his campaign.

Eight firms responded by the June 17 deadline to compete for the contract to provide a major how-to guide on dredging the silt-packed Rivanna Reservoir, according to Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority. The firms include Gahagan & Bryant, the company that Charlottesville mayor Dave Norris invited to give a presentation over a year ago. After that, however, dredging stalled as Albemarle County interests created a task force packed with dredging opponents such as Albemarle County supervisor Sally Thomas and Albemarle County Service Authority board member John Martin, who continues to claim, despite falling water demand, that building a mega-reservoir along Interstate 64 is inevitable. The other firms seeking the contract are Anchor QEA, Apex Companies, Dalton, Olmstead & Fuglevand, F. X. Browne, HDR Engineering, PBS & J, and S. T. Hudson Engineers. A nine-member committee, packed with dam proponents such as Judy Mueller and the executive directors of the area’s two board-controlled waterworks, Tom Frederick and Gary Fern, will make a decision at a time of its own choosing. RIP Kyle, you were the best swim coach in the world. I’ll always remember you and how you helped me improve my swimming and mostly how you always greated me at the end of my events with a big smile on your face.
He died of an aortic dissection. Memorial service is at 1:00 pm, North Arundel Church, 7610 B&A Blvd, Glen Burnie, MD
Hi everyone.
I’m Kyle’s older brother. Kyle’s official cause of death was acute aortic dissection due to a congenital heart defect known as bicuspid aortic valve. It wasn’t really a heart attack, rather his aorta ruptured. He told me the night before that it happened that he was in the best shape of his life since he stopped swimming competitively. Kyle was a great coach, a fine young man, a great outdoorsman, my best friend, and most of all my beloved brother. To everyone who came to both of his memorial services, sent cards, emails, and contacted us by phone, my family and I all thank you so very much. Your sympathy has helped us all get through this shocking and painful time.
