Grammy-bound Calhoun makes top three

by Hawes Spencer

While voters associate Super Tuesday with politicians, February 5 was also the day that online voting sent Central Virginia violinist Ann Marie Calhoun to the Grammy Awards. As part of a YouTube-selected orchestra, she’s one of three musicians in the running for a featured Sunday night Grammy performance with the Foo Fighters.

“She got on a plane this morning for L.A.,” says her husband, Brian, on Super Tuesday.

Calhoun has been the “it” violinist for such top acts as Dave Matthews Band and Jethro Tull. And she has fiddled in television appearances with former Beatle Ringo Starr, including a January 24 performance on the The Late Late Show on CBS. To help her join the Foo Fighters on February 10, people all over the world can vote online for a video performance of the Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender” by Calhoun, aka “theboggster” at http://www.youtube.com/mygrammymoment. Text messaging votes will be allowed all the way into the broadcast.

“They can vote up through 9 o’clock,” says CBS spokesperson Kate Fisher.

Back in Gordonsville, where the couple live, husband Brian says that since they don’t own a television, he’ll have to find somewhere else to watch his wife on the Grammy show.

See her play violin with Ringo on his new song “Liverpool 8″ below.
