Anastasia’s still dead

A Russian scholar recently announced that the DNA in bone shards of two of the royal children slain by the Bolshevik guards in 1918 conclusively shows that all members of the Romanov family have now been accounted for. (That’s contrary, of course, to those who insist— despite separate 1994 DNA evidence– that the youngest Romanov girl, Anastasia, somehow survived the fusillade, tried to drown herself in a Berlin canal, and then married one of Charlottesville’s most eccentric citizens and lived her life in squalor.)

State Sen. ponders changing child porn laws for ’sexting’

A little over a year after the Hook reported on the phenomenon in a May 1, 2008 cover story, at least one member of the General Assembly is considering adjusting the Virginia state code so minors who send nude cell phone pictures of themselves won’t be prosecuted under the same child pornography laws as pedophiles. “I don’t know any member of the General Assembly who a year ago knew what sexting was,” State Senator Ken Stolle (R-Virginia Beach) tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “I think the concern is we actually have behavior that has not been contemplated by the statutes or by the General Assembly.” The General Assembly reconvenes in January. Tommy Garrett moves on

About a month after his lawyer left the case, publicist Tommy Garrett has dismissed his $10.7 million defamation case against this newspaper. Blogger Waldo Jaquith, who’d been subpoenaed by Garrett, celebrates but notes that Garrett’s retreat deprives bloggers of a precedent against future harassment by scoundrels. (5)

WaPo backs Deeds in Dem primary

In the Friday, May 22 edition of the Washington Post, the editorial board of the venerable daily endorsed State Senator Creigh Deeds in the June 9 primary to decide the Democratic nominee for governor. Despite former Alexandria delegate Brian Moran and McLean resident Terry McAuliffe’s ties to the D.C. area, the paper called Deeds “the best candidate for Northern Virginia.” “Unlike his opponents,” reads the editorial, “Mr. Deeds has made clear that he would make transportation his first priority, vowing to tackle this region’s greatest challenge while his political capital is at its height.” Additionally, they like his chances best in November against Republican nomineee Bob McDonnell, against whom Deeds ran for attorney general in 2005. “Mr. Deeds lost by a scant 323 votes out of roughly 2 million cast despite being outspent 2 to 1,” writes the board. “Virginia is still more purple than blue, and Mr. Deeds’s moderate platform would have the broadest appeal.” The endorsement comes on the heels of a SurveyUSA poll that puts McAuliffe ahead of Deeds by 11 points. Sotheby’s sells Minor’s unpaid art purchase

Despite an ongoing lawsuit between the two parties, auction house Sotheby’s sold a painting originally purchased by Internet entrepreneur and Landmark Hotel owner Halsey Minor on Thursday, May 21 after Minor refused to settle his balance due to what he calls “fraudulent” business practices on Sotheby’s part. According to the Art Market Monitor, Childe Hassam’s “Winter Day” sold Thursday for $2.3 million, more than a year after Minor bid $3.9 million for it.
