Snap o’ the day: Pump faster
One week ago, we caught the Citgo on Ivy Road at $3.74 (pictured right). Today, that seems so 20-cents-a-gallon ago.

Poll: Webb tips Virginia for Obama
As speculation over whom Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama will choose to be his running mate continues, a recent survey suggests he may want to look to Virginia, and in particular to his senate colleague Jim Webb. According to a June 20-22 poll from WJLA-TV in Washington and WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Webb in the VP slot breaks the statistical tie among Virginians between Obama and his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain. Should Obama win the Old Dominion’s 13 electoral votes in November, it would be the first time a Democrat has done so since Lyndon Johnson in 1964. # (0)
DMB: From Charlottesville to Margaritaville?
Music critics generally aren’t known for their soothsaying abilities, but yesterday the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Melissa Rugierri offered this glimpse into the future in her ambivalent review Dave Matthews Band’s Saturday set at Nissan Pavilion: “Dave Matthews Band is the Jimmy Buffett of the summer for the under-50 set,” pointing out that both have blissfully devoted fans who flock to see them outdoors under any conditions, and that both acts are “live money-making machine[s].” Of course, there are worse financial futures for a musician. According to Rolling Stone, Buffett earns about $44 million annually. # (2)
Dredge this!
The public can watch three dredging doubters (Ken Boyd, Mike Gaffney, and Don Wagner) and one possible believer (Dave Norris) build a task force to guide the recently launched dredging study. Dredge fans worry that the group— the bosses running the local water trade (City, County, RWSA, and ACSA)— with their embrace of a $143 million no-dredge water project, will marginalize dredging. Find out 8am Monday, June 30 in Room 241 of the County Office Building. (5)
Preview new 'Voice of the Cavs'
After weeks of speculation and days of rumors, the UVA athletic department made it official Tuesday that University of Vermont sportscaster Dave Koehn will replace Mac McDonald the new play-by-play man for UVA football and men’s basketball broadcasts. For a preview of what Wahoo fans have in store, check out this YouTube clip from the Burlington Free Press and give a listen to Koehn’s dulcet baritone. # (0)
Murder hearing postponed
Today’s preliminary hearing for Alvin Lee “Butch” Morris, who is accused of killing his wife’s first husband, Roger Lee Shifflett, 20 years ago, has been postponed until August 7. Morris, 67, was released on $50,000 bond June 18 after a month in jail following his arrest for the 1988 execution-style murder of Shifflett at the Southwind Gas and Grocery on Route 20. (2)
5.1 more cents and I win $50.
I bet a friend gas would be $4.00 a gallon by August 1, 2008.
The fool took the bet.
It will be $6 by the end of summer…
Who uses gas? I hope it is $10 by the end of summer.
I think if everyone would stop complaining and stop driving a day or two, it would crush the gas business forcing the prices back down. We are allowing them to do this to us!!
“Raise and raise and raise the gas prices and “Let `er flicker” -
Our do-nothing Congress (on vacation during what they term as a national crisis) has sat upon their hands for thirty years or more, refusing to take the action required to relieve our dependence upon oil. Now they squall and blame everybody but themselves.
Of course, we have re-elected them and not held them accountable because they feed us some pork sometimes. Now we go “oint, oint”
all the way to the pumps.
This penchant we have for continuing to reelect politicians who can`t do the job is beyond belief-especially since we have the power of the vote and refuse to use it to throw them out.
quote: “I hope it is $10 by the end of summer.”
As sad as it may seem to a lot of people, I agree with you! $10 a gallon will keep all the young reckless kids off the road, those who race up and down the main drag of Seminole Trial in their little fart can cars!
Poor Susan, in for a life of pain with “stop driving a day or two”
Trouble is, this situation is not repairable in a day or two.
I do however tend to agree with her statement “We are allowing them to do this to us!!” Particulary by continuing to consume and not drilling domestic sources. We have large reserves off the coast of Florida and in Alaska not being explored due to NIMBY concerns. Lets start SELLING oil and stop BUYING oil.
[...] gas prices going up faster than we can keep track, what would it take for the Charlottesville region to duplicate some of these lifestyle decisions? [...]
