Snap o' the Day: digging for Bavaro Hall
The old Curry School parking lot continues to get shredded this morning as construction accelerates on the latest addition to the Emmet Street landscape, the UVA education school’s $37 million Bavaro Hall. 2:57pm addendum: While the Hook was handing out free CDs today on the Downtown Mall, local citizen Tom McQueeney strolled up to relate that the late Wally Bavaro, for whom the building is named, pulled him off a gymnasium floor during a brawl between two rival high school teams back in Boston many years ago. And Bavaro, McQueeney adds, was on the opposing team. (0)
Local Tibetans pray for Chinese
While we’re talking about China’s travails trying to host the 2008 Olympics in the aftermath of devastating earthquakes, we should mention that local Tibetans are having a prayer vigil for Chinese earthquake victims Friday night between 8 and 10 on the Downtown Mall at 2nd Street NE, and according to a press release, the Chinese Students and Scholars Society of UVA will attend. Trash truck shuts down Reid's
Reid’s Supermarket on Preston has been powerless since around 6:35 this morning after a Waste Management truck took out an electric pole in the back of the building. “Dominion had to put in two transformers and a pole,” reports store manager Charlie Wood from the closed market. He expects the electricity to be back on in about an hour. (0)
Statlers' last show... again
The Statler Brothers threw in the towel almost six years ago, but their fans are still Countin’ Flowers on the Wall. Now, thanks to the magic of a little thing called television, Statler lovers can watch the crooning country quartet’s last concert– October 26, 2002 at the Salem Civic Center– one more time. It’ll air on Sunday, June 1 from 7-9pm on WVPT. (0)
