  Goode holds back on endorsing McCain
  Capitol Hill publication The Hill reports today that Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Rocky Mount) is one of 14 congressional Republicans that has yet to publicly express support for their party’s presumptive nominee for president, Sen. John McCain (AZ). Goode and McCain have had strong differences of opinion on several issues, most notably on immigration policy. Reached for comment on the matter, Goode press secretary Linwood Duncan said, “[Goode]’s only statement on this issue is that he has at this point endorsed nobody in any races.” Asked if Goode planned on making such an endorsement Duncan replied, “I can’t answer that right now.” # (3)

  Staggering man stabs self?
  Police are now saying the gut-wounded man found Tuesday afternoon lurching near Buford Middle School may have injured himself, the Daily Progress reports. A note found in his Orangedale Avenue home and the lack of cuts in his clothing raised suspicions that his wounds were self inflicted. The man, who has not been identified, underwent surgery at UVA Medical Center. (0)

  Family-killer avoids a trial
  Convicted family-killer Ricky Javon Gray, now on death row for slaying two Richmond families— including the celebrated musician Bryan Harvey, his wife, and two young daughters— will not immediately be tried for the 2005 death of a Culpeper mother found hanging in her burning home. Prosecutors found major evidence problems, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. (0)

  Cheer up, emo kids
  A new study from UVA and England’s University of Plymouth may give sad kids a reason to smile— even if it’s only for a little while. These studies show that when attention to detail is needed, children in a happy mood may be less likely to perform well. In contrast, the study authors (who include UVA assistant professor of psychology Vikram Jaswal) found, “Sadness indicates that something is amiss, triggering detail-oriented, analytical processing.” Let’s hope the slew of A-plusses the sad kids receive don’t make them too happy to analyze everything in excruciating detail.   Sabato called Obama's win in Oct. '06
  If anyone doubts the political prognostication acumen of Larry Sabato, consider this: All the way back in October 2006, in the Hook’s profile of the UVA professor and pundit, Sabato said of Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) chances of winning the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, “If he runs, he could shoot straight past [Sen.] Hillary Clinton [D-NY] to the nomination.” Clinton formally ended her candidacy and endorsed Obama over the weekend.# (1)
