The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced plans yesterday to layoff 450 hourly employees next month. That’s in addition to the layoff of 1,000 full-time positions already announced. The move comes in the face of a $2.6 billion projected revenue shortfall for transportation services over the next six years. VDOT is also considering closing more than half the state’s 41 rest areas and cutting back on mowing highway medians. And apparently there are more layoffs to come, as VDOT officials said that 1500 more jobs would need to be cut by July 2010.

from what I recall, VA has one of the largest DOT in the country by a wide margin.

The odds are overwhelming that these people won’t even be missed…. so long as the governer makes sure that the ones that are left take up the slack in order to preserve their jobs. After all there are now over a thousand people out there who would probably be happy to come back and give us taxpayers our moneys worth.
